About The Position

The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) position at Ohio County Hospital is a PRN role, meaning the individual will work on an as-needed basis and can be scheduled for any shift. The RRT is responsible for fulfilling essential job functions related to respiratory care in a hospital setting. This role requires adherence to the hospital's code of conduct, policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, including HIPAA. The therapist must be proficient in various cardiopulmonary assessments and procedures, manage respiratory equipment, and maintain necessary supplies. Continuing education is required to maintain credentials.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an Approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Completion of NBRC Therapist Multiple-Choice Exam, or equivalent, earning CRT or RRT credentials.
  • BLS Provider or equivalent knowledge.
  • ACLS provider or obtains within 6 months of employment.
  • PALS provider or obtains within 6 months of employment.
  • Proficiency at taking vital signs, assessing and monitoring patient’s cardiopulmonary status, and performing CPR and basic first aid if needed.
  • Solid understanding of respiratory procedures, i.e., EKG, EMG, Holter/Event monitor set-up, ABG, stress testing, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, peak flow monitoring, incentive spirometry, invasive/noninvasive ventilation management, resuscitation, and percussion therapy.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Awareness of bloodborne pathogens, potential exposure to radiation, and dangerous chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Taking vital signs, assessing and monitoring patient’s cardiopulmonary status, and performing CPR and basic first aid if needed.
  • Performing aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, pulmonary function testing, peak flow monitoring, incentive spirometry, noninvasive ventilation management (BiPAP and CPAP), Code Blue response and resuscitation, ventilator management, percussion therapy, electrocardiograms (EKG), Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG), Holter/Event set-up/scanning, stress testing, arterial blood gases, and electroencephalography.
  • Reviewing orders, patient charts, and other pertinent information before proceeding with procedures, and consulting with the ordering physician if clarification is needed.
  • Maintaining inventory of respiratory supplies in the department and other units (emergency department, medical-surgical unit, intensive care unit).
  • Completing weekly inspections of the medical gas outdoor storage area and ordering gas cylinders weekly.
  • Obtaining readings for urgent procedures following the Critical Test Results policy and contacting the ordering physician for instructions if a critical test result is identified.
