Autonomous Systems Engineer

Bright Vision Technologies•Sugar Land, TX
•$100,000 - $150,000•Remote

About The Position

Bright Vision Technologies is seeking an experienced Autonomous Systems Engineer to design, build, and integrate software systems for autonomous robots and robotic platforms. The role spans the robotics software stack, including sensor integration, motion planning, perception, and behavioral systems. The engineer will work with product, design, engineering, operations, and business stakeholders to turn ambiguous requirements into dependable production solutions. The position also includes technical leadership through code and design reviews and mentorship of junior engineers. This is a full-time, direct W2 position with Bright Vision Technologies, working remotely within the continental United States on the company’s in-house Statement of Work engagement. No third-party client, vendor, or implementation partner is involved. The role does not offer new H1B sponsorship, though H1B transfers are supported for qualified candidates. A technical coding assessment is mandatory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of robotics software engineering experience.
  • Strong programming skills in C++ and Python.
  • Hands-on experience with ROS or ROS 2 in production projects.
  • Solid experience in at least one of perception, localization, motion planning, or control.
  • Familiarity with sensor fusion and Kalman or particle filter techniques.
  • Experience with simulation environments such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or MuJoCo.
  • Strong debugging skills in real-time and concurrent systems.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Experience supporting field tests and hardware integration.
  • Willingness to work as a full-time W2 employee of Bright Vision Technologies and contribute to its in-house SOW deliverables.
  • Confidence in technical abilities and hands-on experience to complete a mandatory technical coding assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in Robotics or a related field.
  • Exposure to autonomous vehicles, drones, or industrial automation.
  • Experience with safety-critical software, including ISO 26262 or IEC 61508.
  • Familiarity with ML-based perception pipelines.
  • Open-source contributions in robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop robotics software in C++ and Python with attention to real-time performance and reliability.
  • Design and integrate sensor data pipelines for cameras, LiDAR, IMUs, and proprioceptive sensors.
  • Implement perception, localization, mapping, SLAM, and sensor-fusion algorithms for robust real-world state estimation.
  • Develop motion-planning, control, and trajectory-generation algorithms that account for kinematic and dynamic constraints and support safe, predictable robot behavior.
  • Build behavioral systems using state machines, behavior trees, or task planners.
  • Integrate ROS or ROS 2 frameworks with custom hardware and embedded systems.
  • Implement safety-critical patterns such as watchdogs, fault detection, and safe stops.
  • Build simulation environments using Gazebo or Isaac Sim for development and testing.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and ML engineers to gather requirements, align on technical approaches, and meet engineering and operational standards.
  • Design and execute field tests, including data collection and post-test analysis.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design decisions, configuration references, runbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers through code and design reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing.
  • Evaluate robotics technologies and frameworks and recommend whether to adopt, pilot, or defer them based on engineering needs.
