About The Position

FieldAI is hiring a Robotics Software Engineer for its Irvine team to develop reliable, risk-aware, field-ready AI systems for real robots and real-world deployments. The role focuses on visual reasoning and inspection, reusable robot behaviors, and integrating vision-language inference into robot behavior under real-world compute and latency constraints. The engineer will help make robot reasoning and judgment legible and integrate it across mission workflows. Work is performed in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, with systems built and tested on real hardware and sensors and deployed in unstructured environments.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in robotics, computer science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience building software that runs on real robots.
  • Strong C++ and Python skills.
  • Hands-on ROS 2 experience designing nodes and systems that ship.
  • Working knowledge of behavior trees and computer vision.
  • Experience integrating learned models into a robotics system.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with open-vocabulary detection or visual grounding using vision-language models on robots.
  • GPU inference optimization on embedded hardware, including TensorRT, quantization, or ONNX.
  • Experience with thermal imaging or anomaly detection against reference imagery.
  • Experience deploying on legged platforms in industrial environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop visual reasoning and inspection algorithms and pipelines for real-world deployments.
  • Build inspection capabilities and other robot behaviors as reusable primitives.
  • Integrate on-edge vision-language inference into the behavior loop within compute and latency budgets.
  • Develop legible robot reasoning and judgment and integrate it across the mission workflow.
