About The Position

FieldAI is hiring a Robotics Software Engineer for its Irvine team to develop multimodal inspection software for real robots and field deployments. The role focuses on inspection modalities beyond RGB, including radiometric thermal sensing, gas detection, and acoustic signatures, and integrating those modalities into perception and mission pipelines. The engineer will implement sensing-based behavior activation, deliver per-asset evidence and alerts to data-platform and on-premises workflows, and analyze multimodal inspection performance in real-world deployments. The team builds and tests systems on hardware and deploys them in unstructured environments, emphasizing reliable, explainable, and safety-conscious field-ready autonomy. The role collaborates across AI, software, robotics engineering, product, field deployment, and technical communication teams.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience building sensing software for real robots.
  • Strong C++ and Python skills.
  • Experience with ROS 2 integrating sensor drivers and real-time pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience with camera and thermal calibration, cross-modal registration, and geometry for projecting detections between sensors and 3D.
  • Experience with real-time constraints, including latency budgets, dropout handling, and persisting data through network outages.
  • A field-oriented mindset and experience debugging sensors on a robot in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with optical gas imaging, multi-gas sensing, or radiometric thermal analysis.
  • Experience with acoustic anomaly detection for rotating machinery.
  • Experience integrating predictive maintenance systems such as CMMS or SCADA, or functional safety experience.
  • Experience applying foundation models to thermal or other non-RGB imagery.

Responsibilities

  • Develop inspection modalities beyond RGB, including radiometric thermal, gas detection, and acoustic signatures, from sensing through insight.
  • Fuse multimodal sensing into the perception and mission pipeline.
  • Implement sensing-based behavior activation.
  • Deliver per-asset evidence and alerts into the data platform and on-premises flows.
  • Analyze multimodal inspection performance across real-world deployments.
  • Build and test systems on real hardware and sensors for field deployment.
