About The Position

FieldAI is hiring a Robotics Software Engineer for its Irvine team, which develops and deploys reliable, risk-aware AI systems on real robots in unstructured environments. The role focuses on multimodal inspection beyond RGB, including thermal, gas, and acoustic sensing, and on integrating those modalities into robot perception and mission workflows. The position involves bringing sensing capabilities from development through real-world field deployment and analyzing their performance on deployed systems.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of experience building sensing software for real robots.
• Strong C++ and Python skills.
• Experience with ROS 2 integrating sensor drivers and real-time pipelines.
• Hands-on experience with camera and thermal calibration, cross-modal registration, and geometry for projecting detections between sensors and 3D.
• Experience working with real-time constraints, including latency budgets, dropout handling, and persisting data through network outages.
• A field-oriented mindset, including experience debugging a sensor on a robot in the field.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with optical gas imaging, multi-gas sensing, or radiometric thermal analysis.
• Experience with acoustic anomaly detection for rotating machinery.
• Experience with predictive maintenance integrations such as CMMS or SCADA, or functional safety.
• Experience applying foundation models to thermal or other non-RGB imagery.

Responsibilities

• Develop inspection modalities beyond RGB, including radiometric thermal, gas detection, and acoustic signatures.
• Fuse multimodal sensing into the perception and mission pipeline.
• Implement sensing-based behavior activation.
• Deliver per-asset evidence and alerts into the data platform and on-premises flows.
• Analyze multimodal inspection performance across real-world deployments.
