About The Position

FieldAI is hiring a Robotics Software Engineer for its Irvine team, which develops risk-aware, reliable, field-ready AI systems for real robots and field deployments. The role focuses on building visual reasoning and inspection capabilities, reusable robot behaviors, and on-edge vision-language inference that works within real compute and latency budgets. The position also develops legible robot reasoning and judgment and integrates these capabilities across the mission workflow. The team builds and tests systems on real hardware with real sensors and deploys them in unstructured environments. Its work combines rigorous engineering and learning systems to improve robotics perception, planning, localization, and manipulation, with an emphasis on explainability, safety, and dependable operation outside the lab. The role is based in Irvine, California, and works closely with colleagues across the United States and around the world.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in robotics, computer science, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience building software that runs on real robots.
  • Strong C++ and Python skills.
  • Hands-on ROS 2 experience designing nodes and systems that ship.
  • Working knowledge of behavior trees and computer vision.
  • Experience integrating learned models into a robotics system.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with open-vocabulary detection or visual grounding with vision-language models on robots.
  • GPU inference optimization on embedded hardware, including TensorRT, quantization, or ONNX.
  • Experience with thermal imaging or anomaly detection against reference imagery.
  • Deployments on legged platforms in industrial environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop visual reasoning and inspection algorithms and pipelines for real-world deployments.
  • Build inspection capabilities and other robot behaviors as reusable primitives.
  • Integrate on-edge vision-language inference into the behavior loop within real compute and latency budgets.
  • Develop legible robot reasoning and judgment and integrate it across the mission workflow.
