About The Position

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to contribute to its robot hardware development and testing group. This is a paid, 12-week hybrid internship with an in-office component. The intern will design, fabricate, order, and assemble robotic systems and test spaces, including structural and electromechanical components. The intern will collaborate across disciplines to define project requirements and support project needs, such as rapid iteration on robot component designs and maintenance and repair of robotic systems. They will help ensure the robotic lab remains safe, clean, and effective, and will plan, execute, document, and communicate testing activities with clear and accurate reporting of test conditions and results. Occasional travel may be required, and additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Be an undergraduate or master's engineering student with a hardware-oriented concentration.
  • Understand common mechanical components and robot sensors.
  • Have experience with common rapid prototyping techniques and equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and hand tools.
  • Have solid fundamentals with mechanical CAD software, such as Onshape or SolidWorks.
  • Have experience designing, executing, and summarizing system tests.
  • Be interested in deploying and testing robots both inside and outside the lab.
  • Be willing to communicate and ask questions when in doubt.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing for small-scale contract manufacturing and assembly.
  • Electronic assembly and debugging experience, including crimping, soldering, and wire routing.
  • Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar.
  • Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills, including use of design documents and systems drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, order, and assemble robotic systems and test spaces, including structural and electromechanical components.
  • Work across disciplines with team members to define project requirements and support project needs.
  • Rapidly iterate on robot component designs and maintain and repair robotic systems.
  • Help keep the robotic lab safe, clean, and effective.
  • Plan, execute, document, and communicate testing activities.
  • Provide clear and accurate reporting of test conditions and results.
  • Travel occasionally, as required.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed.
