Robotics HW Engineer

Multiply Labs•San Francisco, CA
•$110,000 - $180,000•Onsite

About The Position

Multiply Labs is a robotics company developing automated biomanufacturing systems for advanced biologics, including gene and cell therapies and antibodies. Its mission is to make life-saving therapies more accessible by reducing the cost and labor involved in their manufacture. The company builds robotic systems and infrastructure for closed, automated, and scalable biomanufacturing, combining robotic orchestration, high-precision automation, cloud-integrated hardware and software, dexterous manipulation, and imitation learning. As a Robotics HW Engineer, you will apply engineering expertise and hands-on technical skills to design complex automated machinery used to manufacture novel pharmaceutical products. The role focuses on hardware and controls solutions for biological process automation challenges that have not previously been solved for robotic interactions and operation. Designs may involve space-efficient, cleanable structures; thermal management; fluid transfer; precision alignment and retention; reusable robotic gripping features and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT); integration of commercial components into custom assemblies; process-variable sensing; motion controls; and aesthetic design. You will work in a fast-paced, collaborative team where creativity and hands-on work are encouraged. Regular work includes CAD, prototype fabrication and assembly, performance testing, commercial-component evaluation, design reviews, and brainstorming. As designs progress, you will provide technical support and documentation for design transfer to manufacturing. The role is based at the company’s San Francisco headquarters and requires up to 10–15% domestic and European travel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience designing and building medical equipment or industrial machinery.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T standards.
  • 2–7+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering.
  • Ability to reach, stoop, crouch, and kneel, including entering and working inside a robotic cluster for maintenance, cleaning, or intervention.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and up to 5 lbs overhead.
  • Manual dexterity to use hand tools, manage cabling, and perform mechanical adjustments.
  • Ability to follow strict safety protocols, maintain situational awareness, and use required PPE for extended periods.
  • Willingness and ability to work around potential hazardous materials, including biological agents and cryogenics.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GMPc, FDA- and/or EMA-regulated industries.
  • Proficiency with Onshape.
  • Hands-on experience with machine shop equipment.
  • Experience designing robot EOATs or robotic work cells.
  • Experience leading meetings, managing project tasks, and developing project timelines.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software, including modeling and creation of detailed drawings.
  • Familiarity with design analysis, including deflections, tolerance stack-ups, load capacity, and material compatibility.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical components, engineering metals and plastics, fasteners, joining methods, fabrication methods, and finishing operations.
  • Familiarity with precision part alignment and locating techniques.
  • Ability to work through basic thermal-fluid design concepts and create test setups to verify design aspects.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, small power tools, and common engineering measurement instruments.
  • Working knowledge of rapid prototyping equipment, including SLA/FDM 3D printers and laser cutters.
