About The Position

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is participating in a multi-institution program to develop specialized unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), with the overall goal of delivering integrated software packages for communication autonomy. CPI is seeking a Robotics Engineer with expertise in ROS1 and ROS2 and familiarity with Docker networking. The successful candidate will initially assist with converting ROS1 software to ROS2. Later work will include developing and conducting unit tests, managing software-stack configurations, simulating system performance, performing laboratory validation, and documenting code with Integration Control Documents. This is a full-time position based at NRL in Washington, D.C., although a significant fraction of the work may be performed remotely. Minor travel may be required, on the order of one or two trips per year for a few days each. The candidate must obtain a SECRET clearance upon hiring. U.S. citizenship is required for DoD contracts.

  • At least five years of test and integration experience with a bachelor's degree, or at least two years of experience with a master's degree.
  • Expertise with Robotics Operating System ROS1 (Noetic) and ROS2 (Jazzy or higher).
  • Familiarity with Docker networking, including Docker, Docker Compose, and Kubernetes.
  • Ability to run multi-container frameworks and multi-vehicle simulations.
  • Ability to create custom ROS packages and integrate off-the-shelf packages.
  • Familiarity with Git and CI/CD pipelines (GitLab or GitHub), including issue tracking, unit tests, and software releases.
  • Proficiency in Python.
  • Must obtain a SECRET clearance upon hiring.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for DoD contracts.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with software/hardware integration.
  • Understanding of ROS action interfaces.
  • Proficiency in C++.
  • Experience working with Linux operating systems, particularly Ubuntu.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols, including TCP/IP and UDP.
  • Familiarity with Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN) protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conversion of ROS1 software to ROS2.
  • Develop and conduct unit tests.
  • Manage the configuration of software stacks.
  • Simulate system performance.
  • Perform laboratory validation.
  • Document code with Integration Control Documents.
  • Run multi-container frameworks and multi-vehicle simulations.
