Robotics Engineer (Product / Electrical)

Becoming•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Becoming is building Developmental Intelligence: AI for predicting how organisms change over time. The company combines engineered metabolic environments, sensing, control, and software into integrated products designed to operate reliably over long time horizons and under real biological constraints. The Robotics Engineer (Product / Electrical) will design and own end-to-end hardware products at the core of Becoming’s platform. This is not a component role: the engineer will design complete systems across mechanical, electrical, and firmware domains and take responsibility for their real-world performance. The role requires depth in at least one domain and fluency across all three, with no handoffs or silos. The engineer will define requirements, make difficult tradeoffs, and own outcomes in a high-agency environment.

Requirements

  • Engineering degree or equivalent demonstrated depth.
  • Experience architecting and shipping custom PCB-based systems.
  • Strong mixed-signal design capability across analog and digital systems.
  • Experience taking boards from design through bring-up and production iteration.
  • Demonstrated ownership of hardware systems operating in real-world conditions.
  • Functional fluency across mechanical and firmware domains.
  • Ability to work without rigid process scaffolding or pre-validated platforms.
  • High agency, end-to-end ownership, clear communication, integrity about tradeoffs and risks, and a systems-integration mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with multi-board architectures with distributed control.
  • Experience with precision sensing systems and low-noise analog front ends.
  • Experience with robotics or advanced instrumentation platforms.
  • Experience designing systems for continuous runtime.
  • Clear examples of reliability tradeoffs made and owned.

Responsibilities

  • Own complex, integrated hardware platforms end to end.
  • Develop multi-layer PCB architectures, including schematic capture, layout, grounding strategy, stack-up design, signal integrity, power distribution, and EMI mitigation.
  • Design mixed-signal boards and low-noise sensing systems.
  • Bring up boards, debug hardware, and refine designs iteratively.
  • Develop firmware for real-time control, monitoring, and fault tolerance.
  • Integrate mechanical systems with attention to thermal, vibration, and environmental constraints.
  • Analyze failures under continuous operation.
  • Conduct reliability engineering and stress testing.
  • Establish engineering standards, documentation, and scalable build processes.
  • Define requirements, make tradeoffs, and take ownership of system outcomes.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity.
  • Full benefits.
  • High-trust, high-ownership environment.
  • Rapid growth in scope and responsibility.
