About The Position

The Robotics and Digital solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Robotics and Controls Engineer for the Strategic Robotics R&D Team. This position is located in Santa Clara, CA. The Strategic Robotics R&D team envisions a future for robotic intervention that is targeted, minimally invasive, and personalized. Building upon a deep understanding of patient and physician needs, we are developing a platform for the next evolution of soft-tissue robotic care. We are a team of clinical, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, robotic controls, and software engineers who are passionate about improving patient care. The team includes a wide range of experience levels from junior engineers to industry experts. We follow an iterative design approach to product development that requires us to collaborate closely across clinical, instruments, accessories, and capital hardware teams. As a member of the Strategic Robotics R&D team you will join us on our journey to design and build one of the world's most advanced medical robotic platforms. You will work in coordination with technical experts of multiple robotic platforms to make meaningful contributions in robotic controls for our latest surgical platform. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and opportunities for growth within the team as we progress towards realizing our vision.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with 2 years experience in a robotics related field (Computer Science, Engineering, etc.) is required, MS degree highly preferred.
  • Proficiency with C/C++ programming and understanding of computer science fundamentals (e.g. algorithms, data structures, object-oriented design in UNIX environments) is required.
  • Fundamental and experience with robotic dynamics and kinematics is required.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills are required.
  • Ability to travel up to 5%, domestic and international is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep knowledge in one or more of the following: Detection/Estimation, UI/UX design, Haptics, Soft Robotics, or Nonlinear Control is highly beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a focused multi-functional team developing robotic solutions for next generation medical robotic systems
  • Develop novel methods for human-robot interaction, incorporating feedback from clinical engineers and physicians
  • Collaborate with instrument and capital hardware engineers to implement and test various algorithms to control novel medical devices and systems
  • Design and implement software in a real-time, safety-critical environment
  • Develop test protocols for evaluating algorithms and evaluating hardware/software performance
  • Quickly implement concept proofs and prototypes, and test on systems
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, procedure development, and clinical procedures
