About The Position

Safely operate robotic welding equipment to fabricate quality products in accordance with shop drawings, production requirements and DWS quality standards. This role involves operating robotic welding and fabrication equipment, identifying steel specifications, fabricating material according to dimensions, and utilizing required tools and interfaces to produce parts. The operator will also adjust and troubleshoot equipment, communicate discrepancies, operate material handling equipment, and load/unload materials. A strong understanding of safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies is essential. The position requires accurate documentation, clear communication, and the ability to assist with training team members. Consistent performance in Safety, Quality, Productivity, Attendance, and Teamwork is expected. Employees are expected to support a one-team, lean culture and perform duties outside of normal work areas as directed. The role requires working scheduled hours consistently and reliably with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and perform arithmetic computations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.

  • Ability to operate forklifts, overhead cranes and other material handling equipment in a safe and proper manner.
  • Use and understand industry and Drake-Williams Steel adopted hand signals used for crane operations.
  • Ability to use and understand CNC and robotic machine control systems as needed.
  • Ability to perform minor mechanical tasks on equipment including cleaning, routine maintenance and basic adjustments.
  • Ability to follow inventory and material handling procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing production requirements.
  • Stand FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  • Walk FREQUENTLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  • Sit only during the break and lunch periods.
  • Lift weights up to 20 pounds from floor to chest CONTINUOUSLY, which includes the various tools utilized in the process of performing the usual work duties.
  • Lift weights up to 35 pounds from floor to waist FREQUENTLY during the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  • Lift weights up to 60 pounds from floor to waist OCCASIONALLY during the work shift.
  • Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to 60 feet.
  • Climb OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY onto steps or over the conveyors.
  • Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties.
  • Kneel in the commission of job duties OCCASIONALLY, depending upon the job.
  • Crawl RARELY up to 10 feet to access tools, materials, etc.
  • Reach forward OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools.
  • Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to guide material attached to the cranes and to attach the chains from the crane to the material.
  • Push and pull drawers open OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to retrieve tools.
  • Employee will OCCASIONALLY push material attached to a jib crane or overhead crane to properly guide into place.
  • Push material OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY into machine for fabrication or at waist level to guide it into place.
  • Gross finger dexterity skills required to operate the various tools and equipment utilized in the course of standard job duties.
  • Upper Extremity whipping/shaking motion of rebar up to 60’ OCCASIONALLY TO FREQUENTLY on shear line at rebar location.
  • Gripping 3/8”-1 ¾” round bars OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY at rebar location.
  • Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week.
  • Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues.
  • Visual ability to read and interpret shop drawings.
  • Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment. PPE includes steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Six months of CNC equipment or Robotic welding equipment operation experience preferred.
  • Overhead crane operation experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate robotic welding and fabrication equipment safely and effectively to meet customer demands and production requirements.
  • Identify steel shapes, sizes, mill tolerances and material specifications.
  • Fabricate material according to dimensions shown on cut lists, shop drawings, gather sheets, welding requirements and machine capabilities.
  • Utilize required tools, welding processes and robotic machine interfaces (HMI) to produce parts in accordance with quality standards.
  • Adjust machines and troubleshoot equipment issues to ensure accurate dimensions and efficient operation.
  • Identify and communicate shop drawing, cut list, fabrication, material or machine discrepancies before or during production.
  • Operate forklifts, jib cranes, overhead cranes, conveyors, transfers and other material handling equipment safely and effectively.
  • Load and unload parts, trailers, rail cars, customer vehicles, machines and robotic systems using proper material handling procedures.
  • Locate and stage materials according to yard maps, cut lists, shop drawings and production requirements.
  • Understand and follow all safety procedures, quality standards, welding tolerances, welding code requirements and company policies.
  • Complete required production documentation, fab reports and timecard entries accurately and timely.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills by reporting issues in a clear, detailed and professional manner.
  • Assist with training team members in equipment operation, processes and procedures as needed.
  • Consistently meet expectations related to Safety, Quality, Productivity, Attendance and Teamwork.
  • Perform duties outside of normal work areas as directed by leadership and support a one-team, lean culture through daily actions and communication.
  • Attend meetings and perform other duties as assigned by management.
  • Work scheduled hours consistently and reliably with minimal supervision from lead or supervisory staff.
