About The Position

THIS POSTING IS INTENDED FOR CAREER FAIR ATTENDEES THIS POSTING IS CURRENTLY BEING USED FOR SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA FLOOD PROTECTION AUTHORITY - EAST CAREER FAIR ON AUGUST 05, 2026. OUR MISSION Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction. OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE The incumbent for this position operates herbicide spray equipment to accomplish an efficient and practical application of herbicides for the Authority and operates mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance or construction tasks. This position requires the have and maintain a current State of Louisiana issued Commercial Applicator License issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. The incumbent reports to a foreman or higher-level supervisor.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in mobile equipment operations.
  • Must have and maintain a current State of Louisiana issued Commercial Applicator License issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Operates spray truck and/or other spray equipment, using protective clothing such as boots, gloves, eye protection, and/or respirators or dust mask when necessary.
  • Maintains the vegetation at highway roadsides, flood walls, abutments, fences, foreshore protection, loose rock transitions, power poles, signs, slope pavement, drainage structures and drainage canals via the application of appropriate herbicides or other chemical treatments.
  • Operates grass cutting equipment such as tractors, turf cats, and other zero-tum cutters, as well as performing labor duties such as cutting trees, picking up paper and trash, using weed trimmers, etc. when conditions are unfavorable for the application of herbicides.
  • Ensures that the proper herbicide is utilized for each vegetative maintenance area and procedure, in accordance with requirements of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and chemical label.
  • Applies herbicides in accordance with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and EPA policies and regulations.
  • Assist in performing scheduled preventative maintenance on equipment as required, including fluid and filter changes, parts lubrication, etc.
  • May assist mechanics with minor repairs to equipment as required, including disassembling and reassembling parts, lubrication and fueling equipment, etc.
  • In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane/Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required and remain on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
