About The Position

Yakima County Government is seeking to fill multiple Road Maintenance Technician I/II (Truck Driver) openings within the Roads Division. These positions are responsible for skilled and semi-skilled maintenance through various activities, including operating single and tandem axle dump trucks, water trucks, and tractors with different trailer and hitch combinations. The role involves transporting, placing, removing, stockpiling, and distributing materials for road maintenance, as well as compacting roadways, snow removal, and sanding operations. The positions also involve operating other construction-related equipment, power tools, and hand tools, performing manual labor, traffic control, and routine preventative maintenance on equipment. Road Maintenance Technician I is an entry-level position, while Road Maintenance Technician II is a journey-level position. While trucking operations are the primary focus, incumbents may be assigned other duties within the Road Maintenance Technician I & II classification as needed.

Requirements

  • Road Maintenance Technician I: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Road Maintenance Technician I: Five (5) years of experience, including 1 year of driving with a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Road Maintenance Technician I: Experience must include motorized equipment operation, road maintenance and/or construction, or related experience.
  • Road Maintenance Technician II (Internal Candidate Requirements): High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Road Maintenance Technician II (Internal Candidate Requirements): A total of five (5) years of experience, including two (2) years of driving with a Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Road Maintenance Technician II (Internal Candidate Requirements): Work experience as a Road Maintenance Technician I.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License with Commercial Driver's License Class A with Airbrake and Tanker Endorsements.
  • Valid State of Washington Flagger Certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of general employment verification.
  • Consent for queries of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Ability to multitask, maintain confidentiality, work under pressure, articulate and communicate in conversations, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of road maintenance/construction techniques and standards, basic equipment maintenance, and work zone safety precautions.
  • Skills in operating water trucks, dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, roadside mowers, and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Ability to apply traffic control techniques, use two-way radios and other communication devices, apply customer service techniques, and establish effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Communication skills, both oral and written, sufficient to receive and follow direction.

Responsibilities

  • Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks and water trucks for activities such as snow removal, sanding roads, watering gravel roads, compacting gravel roads, and hauling dirt, gravel, sand, asphalt, other materials, and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of other equipment including roadside mowers, front end loaders, lowboy tractor-trailer, asphalt distributors, forklifts, vactor trucks, pumps, undercarriage brooms, pickup brooms, tow brooms, and other specified equipment.
  • Performs operational checks and preventive maintenance on equipment, and reports needed repairs.
  • Provides oversight, expertise, and in-field training for the Road Maintenance Technician I position.
  • Performs traffic control operations and implements work zone safety precautions as a flagger.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including those typically assigned to other job descriptions within the Road Maintenance Technician I & II classification.
