About The Position

There are multiple Road Maintenance Technician I/II (Truck Driver) openings with the Yakima County Roads Division at the Sunnyside location. These positions perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance through multiple activities involving the operation of single and tandem axle 5-yard and 10-yard dump trucks, water trucks, and tractors with a variety of trailer and hitch combinations. This includes transporting, placing, removing, stockpiling, and distributing aggregates, liquids, dirt, equipment, and other materials for road maintenance activities. Compacting roadways, snow removal, and sanding operations are included. The role also operates a variety of other construction-related equipment, power tools, and hand tools, and performs manual labor as needed, including traffic control and routine preventative maintenance on equipment. Road Maintenance Technician I is an Entry-Level position, while Road Maintenance Technician II is a Journey-Level position. While the emphasis is on trucking operations, this position may be assigned to perform other duties within the Road Maintenance Technician I & II Class specification when required. A driving exercise with a 10-yard standard transmission Dump Truck will be part of the interview.

Requirements

  • Valid State of Washington Driver's License with Commercial Driver's License Class A with Airbrake and Tanker Endorsements.
  • Valid State of Washington Flagger Certification required for County Road assignments within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of general employment verification.
  • Consent for queries of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse to comply with Federal Regulations (49 CFR Part 382).
  • Road Maintenance Technician I: High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND five (5) years of experience of which includes 1 year of experience driving with a Commercial Driver’s License. Experience must consist of one or all of the following: motorized equipment operation, road maintenance and/or construction experience or experience related to the essential duty statements listed above; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Road Maintenance Technician II: Internal Candidate Requirements: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) AND a total of five (5) years of experience of which includes two (2) years of experience driving with a Commercial Driver’s License AND work experience as a Road Maintenance Technician I. Experience must consist of one or all of the following: motorized equipment operation, road maintenance and/or construction experience or experience related to the essential duty statements listed above; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks and water trucks, including snow removal, sanding roads, watering gravel roads, compacting gravel roads, and hauling dirt, gravel, sand, asphalt, other materials, and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of other equipment including roadside mowers, front end loaders, lowboy tractor-trailer, asphalt distributors, forklifts, vactor trucks, pumps, undercarriage brooms, pickup brooms, tow brooms, and other listed equipment.
  • Performs operational checks and preventive maintenance activities on equipment and reports needed repairs.
  • Provides oversight, expertise, and in-field training for the Road Maintenance Technician I position.
  • Performs traffic control operations and implements work zone safety precautions as a flagger on County roads.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including those typically assigned to other job descriptions within the Road Maintenance Technician I & II classification.
