About The Position

The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) is seeking a Road Design Engineer to join their team. This role is responsible for improving transportation management and public right-of-way in Atlanta, with a focus on safety for all road users. The engineer will assist with planning, concept development, designing engineering projects, reviewing plans, developing design standards, and collecting data such as GIS, traffic, and signal timing. They will also prepare construction plans, conduct traffic engineering studies and safety assessments, provide recommendations, and engage with stakeholders and the public. This is an early-career professional position that works under the supervision of a senior engineer or director, serving as a subject matter expert in road design, safety, traffic operations, and pedestrian/cycling infrastructure.

Requirements

  • BS/BA in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • At least 1 year full-time experience in transportation or traffic engineering.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineering Intern (EI) certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering and roadway engineering design.
  • Working knowledge of transportation construction.
  • Working knowledge of computer aided drafting and design (CADD) systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering.
  • Working knowledge of road safety best practices, pedestrian safety best practices, and cycling safety best practices.
  • Familiarity with Vision Zero road safety program and NACTO Design Guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local roadway design standards, policies, guides, and research.
  • Experience with AASHTO, GDOT, and City of Atlanta guidance and ADA/PROWAG design requirements.
  • Working knowledge of engineering construction plan set development including general notes, specifications and special provisions, standard and special project details, quantities and pay items, and cost estimation.
  • Ability to manage complex projects and lead a team to achieve results.
  • Ability to manage change.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to arrive at constructive solutions.
  • Attention to detail and ability to learn new systems, processes, and workflows quickly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Planner, OneDrive).

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • At least 3 to 4 years’ of full-time experience in transportation or traffic engineering.
  • Ability to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) license within 2-3 years.
  • Road Safety Professional (RSP) and/or Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certifications.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and InRoads or OpenRoads.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArcGIS Pro, Synchro, AutoTurn, GuideSign.

Responsibilities

  • Develops construction plans for various programs including Moving Atlanta Forward Infrastructure Program, Vision Zero, and Safe Routes to Schools.
  • Identifies opportunities for road safety improvements and deployment of pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
  • Plans, studies, and designs solutions to implement road safety improvements and deploy pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
  • Assists with development of engineering studies and plans, including traffic control evaluations, signal warrant studies, capacity analyses, safety analyses, and traffic calming evaluations.
  • Follows city processes for quality control, plan review, and report or design approval.
  • Generates technical writing for reports and prepares presentations.
  • Provides technical input, documents research, and attends project meetings.
  • Researches and implements best practices; develops policies related to road safety planning, studies, and design.
  • Responds to internal or external stakeholder communication requests and coordinates with the communications team for public inquiries.
