About The Position
The RN Unit Educator Medical Surgical Department collaborates with nursing leadership to assess education and performance needs of staff. This role involves maintaining proficiency as a Staff Nurse, providing direct patient care, precepting, and offering bedside education. The educator serves as a clinical resource, mentors new registered nurses, and supports their transition and skill acquisition. They develop and deliver educational programs using engaging strategies to foster critical thinking and competence. Additionally, the educator mentors and evaluates preceptors, partners with other organizational educators to design diverse educational programs, and maintains employee education documentation. They also provide reports on continuing education and assess program success to improve clinical competency. Direct patient care may be provided as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of Nursing
- Three (3) years of clinical experience in the designated specialty area where the position will be located
- Registered Nurse License eligible to practice in the state of Indiana
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through AHA within six (6) months of hire
Nice To Haves
- Master's in nursing
- Five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital setting.
- Experience developing and delivering both didactic simulated clinical education programs requiring skills demonstration in an acute hospital setting.
- Certification in Med-Surg, Orthopedics or Chemotherapy
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with nursing leadership team to assess education and performance needs of staff.
- Maintain proficiency as a Staff Nurse by providing patient care directly, precepting and/or providing bedside "just in time" education to the nursing staff.
- Serve as a clinical resource to staff; maintain visibility in the clinical environment for just in time learning facilitation and/or assisting in providing direct patient care.
- Precept registered nurses new to the department.
- Support role transition, role integration, skill acquisition and mastery as nursing staff advance from novice to expert.
- Develop and deliver education and training processes/activities to foster learning using strategies that engage learners in critical inquiry, critical thinking, problem solving, and foster the development of competence in learners.
- Mentor and evaluate preceptors to enhance learning experiences for all new hires.
- Partner with educators throughout the organization to design educational programs that employ a variety of teaching-learning strategies and the use of technology.
- Assist in maintaining employee education documentation via database or hard copy documentation.
- Provide reports to management on continuing education programs as needed or required.
- Assess the success of training programs and modify programs, as needed to drive clinical competency of unit staff.
- Provide direct patient care per the staff RN role in the assigned unit as needed or required.
- Other duties as assigned.
