The RN Surgical PCU Fellowship is an onsite, full-time night-shift position in the Surgical Progressive Care Unit at UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado. The role provides direct nursing care in a technically complex Progressive Care Unit environment. Nurses use the nursing process and evidence-based practices, work as part of a multidisciplinary team, and prioritize wellness, patient perspective, safety, and quality of care. The role also includes modeling proficiency through precepting colleagues who are new to healthcare or UCHealth and welcoming continued learning in a fast-paced, innovative clinical environment. For experienced nurses new to critical care, the Progressive Care Fellowship provides a four-phased orientation based on AACN’s ECCO® (Essentials of Critical Care Orientation) resources. The program includes simulation-based learning, blocked learning in a multi-system approach, an electronic orientation tracker, and knowledge verification at each stage. It uses novice-to-expert theory and adult learning styles to support critical care competency. In the PCU, AACN’s Synergy Model and specialty certification standards inform evidence-based care models. Clinical educators support individualized specialty education and training, and validate competency throughout clinical orientation.
