About The Position

The OR Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the operating and procedural rooms. Fulfills a leadership role by taking responsibility for monitoring and developing efficient daily workflows and staffing for the surgical area. Collaborates and partners with the Pre/Post Supervisor/Coordinator, anesthesia, and supply chain management at the surgery center and across the health system. Ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for all surgical cases. Provides direct support to staff and surgeons who are performing patient care. Responsible for providing oversight of the surgery center physician preference cards for new and existing surgeons.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • National Nursing Certification within 3 years - Varies
  • Bachelor's Degree: Nursing (Required)
  • Work Experience: Surgical services

Responsibilities

  • Maintains/complete annual competency checklist for operating room staff.
  • Serves as a role model and resource.
  • Assist with yearly budgetary development.
  • Reviews productivity reports to ensure appropriate staffing levels based on benchmarks.
  • Manages daily Kronos edits.
  • Responsible/Accountable for OR suite efficiencies that include; (a) 7:30am on time starts, (b) In-room to Incision times, (c) Room turnover times, and (d) scheduled case duration accuracy.
  • Reviews future surgery schedule to ensure appropriate equipment/supplies are available for all cases in collaboration with Inventory Coordinator and other staff as needed.
  • Maintains a reasonable supply inventory.
  • Responsible/Accountable for staff and surgeon satisfaction in conjunction with OR efficiency and workflow.
  • Facilitating a smooth process for every patient.
  • Participate in various committees that may include; ORVAT, Infection Control Committee, Quality and Process Improvement Committee.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, interviews and selects staff.
  • Provides input and recommendations on clinical ladders, promotions/demotions, progressive discipline and staff participation in unit projects.
  • Seeks input from surgeons and staff on capital equipment needs.
  • Provides input to manager of capital purchase needs.
  • Maintains constant flow of communication with operating room staff, surgeons, anesthesia, SPD, and Pre/Post Op staff.
  • Completes routine rounding with staff, patients, and surgeons.
  • Performs direct patient care duties as needed or a minimum of 2-3 days per month.
  • Supports the Manager in collecting information for accreditation surveys and departmental audits.
  • Actively assist the Manager with implementation of any recommended changes or corrective action plans.
  • Manages vacation request for the operating room staff.
  • Ensures adequate daily staffing.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures.
  • Supports and enforces organizational standards and requirements including but not limited to, compliance regulations, fire, safety/disaster programs, infection control practices, quality improvement programs, and policy and procedures.
  • In conjunction with the Perioperative Educator, assures that orientees are provided with a preceptor to facilitate the completion of the orientation guidelines.
  • Recommends staff development and identifies educational needs for all roles.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of running the operating rooms and procedural rooms, including practice standards, staffing, and quality assurance.
  • Identifies daily staffing needs in accordance with budget and target guidelines.
  • Proactively reviews future schedules (next day, three days, and one week in advance) to anticipate the need for staffing, equipment, and supply adjustments.
  • Manage and monitor schedules for changes.
  • Ability to assess needs of specialized operating room equipment and supplies for all cases.
  • Ability to update and organize surgeon preference cards in collaboration with the Service Line Coordinators.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of running the operating rooms and procedural rooms.
  • In the absence of Manager, responds to customer service issues with patients, families, providers and all staff.
  • Makes assignments base on patient, surgeon, and anesthesia requirements as well as appropriate skill level of the staff.
  • Communicates between surgeon, surgical team, and, anesthesia regarding surgical needs of patient, equipment, supplies, special items, and monitors staff needs.
  • Schedules, books, and grids cases for same day adds.
  • Ability to circulate and/or scrub various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to update and organize surgeon preference cards.
  • Leads and participates in staff huddles and staff meetings.
  • Attends department meetings and organizational meetings as needed.
  • Reviews future surgery schedule to ensure appropriate equipment, supplies, and resources are available for all cases in collaboration with SPD, Inventory Coordinator and Service Line Coordinators.
