About The Position

The Operating Room (OR) Supervisor serves as a working supervisor responsible for both the clinical delivery of perioperative care and the operational management of surgical services within the facility. This role performs hands on surgical procedures within scope, provides direct patient care, and actively participates in case preparation and execution. The OR Supervisor also oversees daily operations, staff coordination, regulatory compliance, and quality initiatives to ensure safe, efficient, and high quality surgical services.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of perioperative nursing experience.
  • Current RN license issued from the state of California
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in surgical procedures within RN scope, including circulating, assisting with patient positioning, prepping, and intraoperative support.
  • Provide direct patient care before, during, and after procedures as needed.
  • Serve as the clinical lead during cases, ensuring adherence to sterile technique and perioperative standards.
  • Step into any OR role (RN circulator, support, case prep) to maintain workflow and ensure timely case completion.
  • Support surgeons and anesthesia providers with clinical needs, equipment, and patient safety measures.
  • Oversee daily OR operations, including room readiness, equipment availability, and supply management.
  • Coordinate surgical schedules, case sequencing, and turnover efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with LTAC specific surgical protocols and patient acuity considerations.
  • Collaborate with anesthesia, surgeons, sterile processing, and nursing leadership to optimize workflow and resource utilization.
  • Supervise OR nurses, surgical technologists, and support staff while working alongside them during procedures.
  • Provide real time coaching, mentoring, and clinical guidance during cases.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, competency assessments, and ongoing staff development.
  • Assist with staffing assignments based on case mix, acuity, and staff skill levels.
  • Ensure compliance with AORN standards, CMS regulations, accreditation requirements, and infection prevention protocols.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and incident reviews.
  • Monitor sterilization processes, equipment maintenance, and supply chain integrity.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, logs, and regulatory records.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between surgical teams, physicians and hospital leadership.
  • Communicate workflow changes, policy updates, and clinical standards to staff.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, safety huddles, and operational meetings.
  • Foster a collaborative, patient centered culture within the OR.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Develops departmental policies and procedures that are consistent with regulatory compliance and standards of practice.
  • Ensures staff education on hospital wide and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the employees receive compliance training and all education necessary to perform their job responsibilities, as required by the Company's Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance.
  • Ensures staff knowledge, application and accountability for Vista Specialty Hospital policies, procedures, employee handbook, regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Responsible and/or participates in facility operations, strategic planning, resource management, performance improvement (QAPI) and timeliness of reporting as required.
  • Maintains appropriate staffing per budget.
  • Reviews work schedules and assigns duties to achieve departmental goals.
  • Completes or participates in staff performance evaluation and competencies timely.
  • Monitors staff time and attendance and ensures timely completion of payroll.
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring, orientation, problem and conflict resolution, and disciplinary action of staff.
  • Ensures staff is competent to perform all aspects as related to their job responsibilities.

  • Ensures availability of adequate supplies and makes recommendations in supply par levels.
  • Participates in product evaluation.
  • Ensures availability of functional equipment and evaluates additional equipment needs for the department.
  • Responsible for completion of Capital Budget Requisition (CBR) as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate charges are captured and submitted timely.
  • Ensures appropriate utilization of occurrence reporting system and timely follow up.
  • Responsible for immediate follow up and escalation of significant events such as: Patient complaints/grievance Environmental safety and equipment failure resulting in patient harm. Sentinel events (patient safety events resulting in death or permanent dismemberment).
  • Collaborates with staff other disciplines to develop and implement patient safety initiatives and corrective action plans.
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings.
  • Maintains records of attendance and topics discussed.
  • Disseminates information through shift huddles, board postings and memos.
  • Ensures consistent compliance with environment of care standards.
