About The Position

The Registered Nurse Stroke Coordinator provides leadership and vision for the Stroke Program in terms of operations, services, and patient care, consistent with best practices and evidence-based care. This role serves as an active member of the University Hospitals Core Stroke Team, overseeing the coordinated care of stroke patients in terms of health prevention, health promotion, and rehabilitation. The coordinator identifies, tracks, and supports all inpatient stroke care, reporting findings to the Stroke Committee. They also coordinate and facilitate educational opportunities for staff, physicians, patients, external providers, and the community, while identifying and pursuing opportunities to promote UTSW and the Stroke Program. Additionally, the role involves identifying relevant areas for nursing research, initiating projects, and participating on research teams. The RN Stroke Coordinator leads and directs the achievement of quality care for the stroke patient population, oversees the development of appropriate policies and procedures, and analyzes data to coordinate practice changes. They also coordinate education and verify competence of staff performing NIHSS, adhere to hospital and nursing policies, and incorporate professional practice models into patient care. The position includes providing coaching and counseling to nursing personnel, ensuring accurate event reporting, investigating event reports, and notifying management of high-risk situations. The coordinator actively participates in patient care conferences, promotes professional growth of staff, collects performance data, and provides input for performance reviews. They also coordinate self-scheduling, maintain Kronos records, and manage inventory of equipment and supplies. Finally, the role assists with staff meetings, special projects, performance improvement activities, and communicates data to staff regarding performance and quality improvement.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree Graduate of an accredited Nursing program with BSN or higher
• 3 years clinical practice
• Current Texas (or BNE Compact State) license
• BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
• REGISTERED NURSE Licensure as Registered Nurse by Board of Nurse Examiners for State of Texas.
• Natl Inst Health Stroke Scale
• Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates opportunities to teach and mentor other nursing and ancillary personnel.
• Coordinates and facilitates provision of educational opportunities for staff, physicians, patients, external providers of care, and the community.
• Identifies and pursues opportunities to provide information and/or services to the community to promote UTSW and the Stroke Program.
• Identifies relevant areas for nursing research, initiates projects and participates on research team outcomes.
• Leads and directs achievement in the provision of quality care to the stroke patient population.
• Oversees development of appropriate policies and procedures required for the provision of effective and efficient stroke care.
• Analyzes data & coordinates implementation of practice changes as needed.
• In conjunction with Clinical Education and Department Managers, coordinates education and verifies competence of staff performing NIHSS.
• Adheres to appropriate hospital and/or Department of Nursing policies, procedures, clinical pathways and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice.
• Incorporates ANA standards, professional practice model (Shared governance) and care delivery model (Relationship Based Care) into the provision of safe, quality patient care.
• Provides timely, confidential coaching and/or counseling of nursing personnel as appropriate and follows up with accurate reports to Clinical Nurse Manager.
• Assures first person reporting of events through RL Solutions.
• Ensures all staff are competent in entering event reports & serves as a resource when necessary.
• Investigates facts of event reports as able.
• Facilitates timely receipt of these reports for follow-up by the Clinical Nurse Manager.
• Notifies Nurse Manager/Risk Manager immediately of high risk situations.
• Actively participates in routine & special patient care conferences.
• Promotes and enthusiastically supports professional growth of staff by providing equal opportunities for participation in unit based activities, patient care/unit decisions, hospital committees, and/or continuing education.
• Collects information and maintains records regarding performance and contributions on an on-going basis throughout the fiscal year.
• Provides input and/or conducts annual performance reviews and orientation evaluation of personnel assigned to the unit.
• Coordinates self scheduling to maintain appropriate coverage for unit needs.
• Maintains Kronos records on a daily basis, monitoring for trends that require intervention ie., late clock-ins, incremental overtime, missed punches.
• Assumes delegated responsibility for inventory control of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Facilities timely return of rented or borrowed specialty equipment.
• Solicits staff input regarding equipment and supply needs for the unit.
• Assists with staff meetings, special projects and the development, implementation & evaluation of performance improvement activities.
• Communicates data and solicits input from staff regarding performance and quality improvement ie. patient safety, infection control.
• Actively participates on hospital work groups.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
