About The Position

The RN MDS is responsible for the coordination of the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), including the electronic transmission of RAI data to the state Bulletin Board in accordance with State and Federal regulations and facility policies. This role also facilitates communication between the Interdisciplinary Team and provides ongoing education to those preparing the M.D.S.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Experience with Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI)
  • Knowledge of State and Federal regulations for RAI
  • Proficiency in RAI computer systems
  • Experience with Minimum Data Set (MDS)
  • Understanding of RUG scores
  • Familiarity with Medicare review and coverage criteria
  • Ability to conduct chart audits
  • Experience developing tracking tools and forms
  • Knowledge of RAI/MDS software and vendor relations
  • Understanding of Medicare Certification/Re-Certification forms
  • Experience with Resident Rosters, Census, and Condition Reports
  • Ability to work with state RAI/MDS automation coordinators
  • Coordination skills with billing departments
  • Internet research skills for RAI and Medicare processes
  • Liaison skills with Interdisciplinary Teams

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) and electronically transmit RAI data to the state Bulletin Board.
  • Facilitate communication between the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Provide ongoing education to staff preparing the M.D.S.
  • Schedule completion of RAI following State and Federal guidelines.
  • Notify Interdisciplinary Team members of assessment schedules.
  • Assist in the completion of RAI as needed.
  • Assist with data input into the RAI computer system.
  • Supervise the completion of the RAI by the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Modify assessment schedules to ensure appropriate RUG score for each individual resident.
  • Screen each Minimum Data Set (MDS) for accuracy before finalizing, locking, and signing.
  • Transmit RAI data to the state weekly or as needed.
  • Track Validation Reports, Monthly and Quarterly Reports from the state.
  • Actively interact with the Interdisciplinary Team in daily conferences to evaluate resident status and needs relative to Medicare skilled coverage and potential RUG category changes.
  • Assist Interdisciplinary staff with Medicare review via chart audit.
  • Develop customized tracking tools and/or forms for interdisciplinary team members.
  • Ensure RAI/MDS software is functioning properly and is in contact with the software vendor for the most current version.
  • Clarify Medicare Certification/Re-Certification forms for different disciplines.
  • Assist with the completion and maintenance of the Resident Roster and the Census and Condition Reports.
  • Work closely with the state RAI/MDS automation coordinator.
  • Coordinate with the billing department on assessment schedules and billing codes.
  • Utilize the Internet for research and information gathering for changes in the RAI and Medicare process.
  • Act as a liaison to the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the position and as delegated by the Director of Nursing.
