About The Position

This is a full-time Registered Nurse position in an inpatient surgical care unit. The 20-bed telemetry PCU specializes in the care and management of general and bariatric surgery patients, including a majority of Enhanced Recovery (ERAS) patients. The unit also serves as an alternate care area for neuro/trauma surgery, hospitalist/medicine, and urology/other surgery patients. The role requires delivering excellent patient care and customer service with respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy. RNs are accountable for nursing coordination and individualized care for patients of all ages, utilizing delegation and critical thinking skills within a collaborative team approach.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing from an accredited college or graduate of an approved program eligible to sit for the VA licensure exam.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • AHA BLS-HCP required.
  • May be required to obtain/maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.
  • Computer skills required for electronic medical record (EPIC).

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care to achieve optimum patient outcomes for patients of all ages as appropriate to service area.
  • Completes, documents, and uses age-specific admission and ongoing assessments to develop a plan of care.
  • Collaborates with members of the health care team, patient, and family to develop, implement, and evaluate an age-specific interdisciplinary plan of care, revising it according to changes in patient status.
  • Accurately administers and documents treatments and medications for patients of all ages utilizing automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Identifies, incorporates into the plan of care, implements, and documents patient/family (caregiver) educational needs in a timely manner.
  • Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
  • Consistently demonstrates the role of patient advocate, protector of patient’s rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients served.
  • Determines and performs within clinical, leadership, and/or education pathways to support (direct/indirect) evidenced based, quality patient care service and performance improvement.
  • Exhibits clinical expertise in rapidly changing circumstances.
  • Plans strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource consumption and improve patient outcomes.
  • Functions as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
  • Manages resources, establishes priorities, and modifies the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Completes manager/director predetermined projects within specified time frames and according to pre-established guidelines.
  • Uses problem-solving methods to facilitate resolution to patient and personnel situations that present in the work area.
  • Takes an active role in the orientation of new employees.
  • Provides feedback to staff using appropriate communication and documentation.
  • Provides input into practice, environment, and work issues by participating on unit, hospital, and/or system activities which facilitates staff participation/input in decision making.
  • Assists with providing education activities for the unit/department.
