About The Position

This is a full-time LPN position in a 20-bed telemetry PCU specializing in the care and management of general and bariatric surgery patients. The unit also serves as the alternate unit for neuro/trauma surgery patients, hospitalist/medicine patients, and urology/other surgery patients. The LPN practices practical nursing under the direction of a registered nurse or physician, partnering with the RN in data collection, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care. The role involves participating in the nursing process for patients of all ages, communicating with team members, ancillary departments, and physicians, and contributing to the patient database and interdisciplinary plan of care. The LPN will identify and address patient/family/caregiver educational needs, apply knowledge of growth and development, implement therapeutic treatment plans, administer medications, and advocate for patients. The position also involves contributing to performance improvement activities, supporting organizational initiatives, and potentially orienting and developing others, with the possibility of assigning tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • Licensed to practice practical nursing in the state of Virginia.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development, possesses the ability to collect data reflective of the patient’s status, interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provides the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • In Psychiatry and Behavioral Health: de-escalation training must be successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained going forward.

Responsibilities

  • Partners with the RN in collecting data, planning, implementing and evaluating patient/resident care.
  • Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.

  • Contributes to the development of the patient/resident database and interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Identifies patient/resident/family/caregiver educational needs, incorporates education into plan of care and documents.
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development to appropriately care for patients/residents.
  • Implements prescribed therapeutic treatment plans and procedures.
  • Administers prescribed medication to patients/residents.
  • Advocates for patients, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support.
  • Contributes to Carilion's performance improvement activities and supports service area/facility/organization initiatives.
  • Contributes to the orientation and career development of others.
  • May assign tasks to as needed.
