Under the supervision of the Department of Nursing, the licensed registered nurse is responsible and accountable for patient nursing care in accordance with nursing practice standards, the nurse's code of ethics, and the Indiana Nurse Practice Act. The role uses the nursing process to assess patient status, plan and implement nursing actions, and evaluate care. The nurse applies knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and interprets patient assessment data to provide age-specific care in accordance with nursing policies and procedures. The ED/ICU Float Nurse cares for a wide variety of patients in Harrison County Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The ED is the nurse's primary department, but ICU staffing needs take priority when additional coverage is required. During a shift, the nurse provides direct care as part of the nursing team based on patient census, acuity, staffing needs, and operational requirements. The nurse may start a shift in the ED and be reassigned to the ICU to support appropriate staffing and safe patient care. The nurse may also be assigned to either department for an extended period to address staffing vacancies, employee absences, vacations, leaves of absence, or other operational needs. Assignments are based on patient care needs and the nurse's demonstrated competency, training, and qualifications for the clinical area.
