About The Position
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients across the lifespan, from pediatrics to geriatrics, in a 26-bed department. The department is a Level II trauma center, stroke center, and approved chest pain center, with geriatric and pediatric accreditations. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 4:1. Department resources include dedicated educators who support ED competencies and a trauma coordinator. The department describes its culture as one of teamwork and appreciation for the contributions of technicians, nurses, and providers. The role includes performing patient assessments, developing and implementing care plans, delivering nursing interventions, and adjusting care based on ongoing evaluation. The nurse maintains accurate documentation, supports patient and staff safety, collaborates with patients, families, providers, and colleagues, and contributes to peer development and ongoing learning. Frequently used skills and equipment-related activities include IV placement, medication administration, critical patient management, assisting with sedation, casting, and wound management.
Requirements
- Prior emergency department registered nurse experience; RN experience of more than 2 years.
- Active Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) credential from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 1 year.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 1 year.
- Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) certification from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) within 2 years.
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) within 2 years.
- Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS) certification from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) within 2 years.
Responsibilities
- Perform responsibilities and duties required by the unit and the scope of service.
- Implement procedures and theories specific to the area of practice and emergency department nursing.
- Complete initial patient assessments and develop plans of care based on unit standards and patient and family needs, in collaboration with providers, patients, and families.
- Implement plans of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures; modify the plan based on continuous assessment and evaluation.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care and patient records for use by the healthcare team.
- Promote patient and employee safety by using appropriate nursing interventions, adhering to safety standards, and reporting or correcting hazards and incidents.
- Communicate and collaborate with staff, visitors, patients, and families, including addressing issues directly and privately when appropriate.
- Offer constructive feedback to peers, support their professional development, and collaborate to expand knowledge and solve problems.
- Identify personal learning needs and take initiative to address them.
- Fulfill departmental competency requirements.
