About The Position

The RN Clinical Manager of Surgical Services is a full-time, exempt position responsible for providing holistic, individualized care using the Nursing Process. This role involves demonstrating an advanced level of clinical competency, judgment, and teaching skills, with a commitment to improving patient care quality. The manager will collaborate with the Department Director to provide 24/7 management oversight for OR, Flexcare, PACU, Central Processing Department, Cardiac Cath Lab, IR, Endoscopy, and Ambulatory Surgical Departments. Responsibilities include ensuring departments meet vision and clinical expectations for patient assessment, treatment, and care across all age groups. The position requires working scheduled hours, including holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call duties, and participating in emergency response as a disaster service worker. The role also emphasizes recognizing and reporting perceived misconduct and maintaining cooperative behavior under pressure with competing deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in Surgical Services.
  • At least one (1) year of Operating Room (OR) experience.
  • At least one (1) year in another perioperative area such as Pre-Op, PACU, CPD, Cath Lab/Interventional Radiology, or Endoscopy.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements, including The Joint Commission, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills with using an EMR and Microsoft Office Products such as Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
  • National certification in a related field identified within 90 days of hire, with approval from the respective VP within 90 days of accepting the position.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and documenting administrative and management duties pertinent to the department.
  • Overseeing duties, responsibilities, and accountabilities of staff job descriptions.
  • Serving as a clinical resource for staff, new orientees, and students during the shift.
  • Coordinating staffing needs with the Director and/or Staffing Coordinator/Nursing Supervisor.
  • Facilitating problem-solving, promoting cooperative communication, and maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Actively participating in achieving and maintaining department compliance with all state, federal, and third-party regulatory agency standards, ensuring the department is always 'Survey Ready'.
  • Demonstrating continuous improvement in department-specific measures that benchmark the organization's performance against national standards.
  • Assuming or supporting the Charge Nurse role and making patient care assignments based on acuity, staff qualifications, and resources.
  • Demonstrating adaptability and flexibility in meeting unit needs, including providing staffing support, working extra shifts, and assisting in unusual clinical situations.
  • Promoting an atmosphere of open communication with respect for the individual.
  • Accepting and supporting changes proactively and positively.
  • Representing appropriate practice and directing others to follow hospital policies, procedures, or Standards of Nursing Care.
  • Modeling appropriate communication and assisting other staff in identifying appropriate communication channels and methods.
  • Ensuring payroll practices follow Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Collaborating with Department Directors regarding disciplinary actions and delivering disciplinary actions as assigned.
  • Ensuring daily OR monitoring, including room temperatures, crash and MH carts, and sterilizer logs.
  • In the absence of a Charge Nurse, assuming responsibility for the scheduling board, assignments (including call coverage and assurance of daily charge entries).
  • Assisting with peri-operative patient care to ensure patient safety, continuity of care, and staff breaks.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Surgery, Operations Manager, and Materials Management in addressing physician requests for peri-operative supplies and equipment, maintaining fiscal awareness.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Surgical Services and Operations Manager in meetings with manufacturer vendors.
  • Ensuring Central Processing Department (CPD) compliance, efficiencies, and productivity in daily operations, including instrument processing, and emergency supplies and equipment processing and distribution.
  • Collaborating with the Perioperative Educator to ensure staff education and competency on new peri-operative surgical instrumentation, equipment, and technology before assignments.
  • Ensuring employee evaluations are completed in a timely manner.
  • Supporting and acknowledging staff through Employee Recognition.
