RMTC Product Support Team Leader

Cummins•Whitakers, NC

About The Position

The RMTC Product Support Team Leader provides technical leadership and hands-on problem-solving support for complex engine systems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The role applies mechanical design, systems knowledge, and technical troubleshooting to resolve issues across engine components and maintain production continuity. CAD and 3D modeling proficiency is required, as is familiarity with internal-combustion-engine bill-of-materials structures and data-management systems such as Windchill and IMS. The role manages urgent, high-impact issues that may threaten engine build schedules by organizing cross-functional teams, setting priorities, and directing resources to restore production safely and quickly. It requires communicating detailed technical guidance to technicians and concise progress and decision updates to leadership. The leader uses structured problem-solving methods, including the full 7-Step Problem Solving process, FTA, and RCA, to identify root causes and implement lasting corrective actions. The team leader oversees day-to-day team activities, reviews and approves engineering change documentation, and guides cross-functional partners toward practical solutions. The position primarily addresses engine hardware; experience with electrical systems, electronic components, EHI, software, or controls integration is beneficial. An in-person interview at the Rocky Mount Engine Plant is preferred. The role collaborates with technical managers, project leaders, engineers, and suppliers; makes quality-focused engineering decisions; applies and improves processes such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, and FIRG; leads projects or owns complex components and systems; executes engineering work systems; improves processes; coordinates technicians and student employees; shares knowledge; and provides technical guidance as a subject-matter specialist. The position plans and monitors product-development activities, identifies and prevents potential product failure modes, uses computational and analytical methods to evaluate product performance, manages interfaces and integration across system boundaries, and applies data-driven problem-solving to protect customers and prevent recurrence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent, is required.
  • Five to seven years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Prior Senior Engineer or Lead Engineer-equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, with a demonstrated record of technical problem-solving and quality decision-making, is required.
  • CAD and 3D modeling skills are required.
  • Broad technical competencies, particularly the ability to solve design problems across engine components, are required.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a manufacturing environment, prioritize urgent issues, organize cross-functional activities, and direct resources to restore production is required.
  • Strong communication skills, including tailoring technical instructions for technicians and progress updates for executives, are required.
  • Familiarity with all phases of the 7-Step Problem Solving methodology and tools such as FTA and RCA is required.
  • Ability to direct day-to-day team activities, review and approve change documentation, and guide cross-functional groups is required.
  • A broad range of software-environment competencies for resources used at Cummins is required.
  • Familiarity with internal-combustion-engine structure and manufacturing is preferred; experience manufacturing other machinery or hands-on mechanical-systems experience may also be considered.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Master’s degree relevant to the discipline may be required for select roles.
  • Experience with advanced electrical concepts, EHI, electronic component design, software, and controls is a plus.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Nice To Haves
