The Risk Manager analyzes, interprets, and manages information, communicating with various professional and regulatory customers. This role requires self-direction, independence, and a goal-oriented approach, with knowledge of data collection and reporting. The position involves familiarity with clinical risk management concepts, practices, and procedures in an acute health care setting to promote patient satisfaction and reduce the likelihood of litigation. The Risk Manager will document and respond to complaints and grievances, demonstrate the ability to reduce liability claims, sentinel events, near misses, and the overall cost of the organization’s risk. This role involves reporting and presenting information to hospital leaders/executive team on quantifiable and actionable data, promoting open dialogue about risk, and fostering a safe, just culture. Responsibilities include documenting, classifying, and tracking possible risks and adverse events, along with protocols for mandatory reporting. The Risk Manager will respond to reported risks and events, including acute response, follow-up, reporting, and repeat failure prevention. Utilization of the reliability learning tool, recognizing and addressing patient safety/risk exposures affecting the quality of care and outcomes, and making medical staff quality review referrals as appropriate are key functions. The role involves using statistical and other methods to aggregate, analyze, and prepare data reports for presentation. Facilitation of the Risk Management Program, including identification, analysis, planning, and implementation focusing on events which resulted or could have resulted in adverse risk or a compromise to patient or environmental safety, is essential. Active engagement in the Patient Safety Program, developing effective medical error reduction strategies and tools, and collaboration with hospital departments and committees to implement identified needs for improvement are also critical. The Risk Manager serves as a representative for committees within the Continuous Quality/Patient Safety and Risk Management programs.
