About The Position

LMI is seeking an RFID Subject Matter Expert specializing in label printing and automation. The role leads the design of complex solutions that connect technology with business value, serving as a trusted advisor to customers and a technical resource for LMI’s sales and delivery teams. It combines customer discovery, solution architecture, hands-on validation, and technical leadership to help customers implement reliable identification and tracking solutions—from printing and encoding RFID labels to capturing and integrating data across their operations. The position may be supported remotely, with a preference for candidates in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. Travel is about 25% as needed for customer discovery, site assessments, demonstrations, pilots, deployments, and other business needs. Availability during core business hours is required; additional coordination may be needed based on customer and project needs. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must hold or be eligible for a U.S. Government security clearance.

Requirements

  • 6–8 years of experience in presales, technical consulting, solution architecture, or related roles within a technology provider, systems integrator, reseller, or similar organization.
  • Strong track record of customer-facing technical engagements and ownership of solutions from discovery through deployment.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and supporting RFID systems and RFID label printing and encoding workflows.
  • Working knowledge of passive UHF RFID standards, EPC data structures, serialization, and applicable GS1 standards.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues involving printers, labels, ribbons, RFID inlays, readers, software, and data integration.
  • Experience with RFID label specifications, including inlay and chip selection, materials, adhesives, ribbons, dimensions, and application requirements.
  • Experience developing printing and encoding workflows, including data mapping, serialization, verification, and exception handling.
  • Experience configuring and validating RFID printers, including media calibration, encoding position, RF power, print quality, and production performance.
  • Ability to lead customer discovery workshops, site assessments, demonstrations, proofs of concept, and pilot deployments.
  • Ability to develop solution documentation, bills of materials, statements of work, acceptance criteria, and business value justifications.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Deep expertise in passive UHF RFID, including fixed and handheld readers, antennas, RFID printers, and tag selection.
  • Hands-on experience with RFID label printing and encoding, including label design, printer configuration, media and ribbon selection, encoding workflows, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with barcode scanning, industrial printing, print-and-apply systems, or related automation technologies.
  • Strong understanding of warehouse, manufacturing, distribution, logistics, or supply chain operations.
  • Ability to translate operational challenges into practical solutions, measurable business outcomes, and return on investment.
  • Customer-facing technical leadership from discovery through deployment.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and complex solutions clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
  • Experience scoping professional services and ongoing support requirements.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and hold or be eligible for a U.S. Government security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with passive UHF RFID solution design, deployment, optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with RFID hardware and platforms from Zebra Technologies or other leading vendors.
  • Experience conducting RFID site surveys, read-zone design, antenna placement, tag selection, and pilot deployments.
  • Experience with RFID label printing and encoding for item, case, pallet, inventory, and asset identification.
  • Experience with thermal-transfer printing, print-quality optimization, and application-specific label and ribbon selection.
  • Familiarity with RFID printer languages and interfaces, including ZPL, printer APIs, and automated print workflows.
  • Experience with EPC serialization, GS1 encoding schemes, and barcode and RFID data alignment.
  • Experience with on-metal RFID labels and applications involving challenging materials or environmental conditions.
  • Experience integrating RFID and printing solutions with WMS, ERP, MES, inventory, asset-tracking, or supply chain platforms.
  • Experience with print-and-apply systems, inline RFID encoding and verification, PLC integration, conveyors, sortation, or material-handling equipment.
  • Experience developing business cases and return-on-investment models for automation and operational improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Own solution development for complex or strategic customer opportunities, guiding technical direction, aligning stakeholders, and ensuring designs meet operational requirements.
  • Partner with Account Managers, technical peers, and service teams to scope, design, and position solutions aligned with LMI’s capabilities and customer needs.
  • Lead customer discovery workshops, site assessments, whiteboarding sessions, and technology demonstrations to uncover requirements and define success criteria.
  • Design RFID solutions spanning label printing and encoding, reader infrastructure, data capture, software integration, and operational workflows.
  • Define RFID label specifications, including inlay and chip selection, label materials, adhesives, ribbons, dimensions, and placement based on application and operating environment.
  • Develop printing and encoding workflows addressing EPC formatting, serialization, data mapping, verification, and handling of failed or duplicate tags.
  • Configure and validate RFID printers, including media calibration, encoding position, RF power, print quality, and production performance.
  • Lead proofs of concept and pilot deployments to validate read performance, encoding reliability, integration, and business value.
