RFIC Design Engineer

Apple•San Diego, CA

About The Position

The RFIC Design Engineer will work within Apple’s Wireless Radio team, which architects, designs, and validates radio transceivers integrated into wireless SoCs. The role contributes to wireless connectivity solutions and works across a vertically integrated engineering organization spanning RF and analog architecture and design, systems/PHY/MAC, VLSI/RTL, emulation, design verification, test and validation, and firmware/software engineering. The position involves designing and developing analog, mixed-signal, and RF circuits for high-performance wireless systems, including transceiver blocks, and characterizing and debugging silicon. The engineer collaborates with product development groups and may work with system architects and digital design groups to translate system requirements into circuit requirements and optimize analog/digital partitioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree and 3 or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Understanding of analog design concepts, including noise analysis, linearity, mismatch, stability, and other analog impairments.
  • Experience with Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre RF, MATLAB, EM simulation tools such as EMX and HFSS, or similar tools.
  • Expertise in analog, mixed-signal, and RF circuit design.
  • Experience designing wireless-system circuit blocks such as LNAs, PAs, PLL/VCO/DCO/LOGEN blocks, mixers, baseband filters and amplifiers, and data converters, and associated calibration methods.
  • Experience in silicon characterization and debugging.

Nice To Haves

  • MSEE and PhD, plus relevant industry experience.
  • Deep experience crafting and bringing wireless transceivers into mass production.
  • Familiarity with RF transceiver architectures, their trade-offs, and system specifications.
  • Understanding of how modulation type affects radio architecture and requirements.
  • Proven ability to work with digital design groups to optimize partitioning between digital and analog domains.
  • Familiarity with mixed-signal mode verification methodology, including SystemVerilog, AMS, and Nanotime.

Responsibilities

  • Design analog, mixed-signal, and RF circuits for wireless systems, including LNAs, PAs, PLL/VCO/DCO/LOGEN blocks, mixers, baseband filters and amplifiers, and data converters.
  • Develop calibration methods for high-performance wireless systems.
  • Characterize and debug silicon.
  • Collaborate with system architects to translate system requirements into IC-level circuit requirements.
  • Work with digital design groups to determine an effective partition between digital and analog domains.
  • Contribute to the design and validation of radio transceivers integrated into wireless SoCs.
