RF Design Intern, AI focus

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc.•Morrisville, NC

About The Position

MACOM is seeking an RF design engineering intern for its MMIC Business Unit, which designs MMICs for cellular, aerospace and defense, and other wireless applications. The intern will work with MACOM’s AI project team and GaN MMIC design team on a project supporting the design of a GaN MMIC power amplifier or an aspect of its design flow using AI, or on developing AI agents to improve the cycle time and efficiency of design-flow activities. The specific project will reflect the candidate’s experience and the state of AI-driven design at MACOM, with a focus on achieving a useful business outcome. This is a 12-week, full-time internship of 40 hours per week. Interns receive an individual, well-defined project with outcome goals, hands-on experience, training and ongoing supervision. The program also includes an intern webinar series, networking and social events, a poster session to present project successes and pitfalls, and formal written feedback.

Requirements

  • Have a degree or be very near completion of a BSc, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, with RF experience or coursework and AI experience and coursework.
  • Have proven experience and ability developing AI agents that substantially reduce design tasks, potentially from a week or a couple of weeks to roughly a day.
  • Be fluent with RF simulation tool ADS.
  • Be fluent in dBs and the Smith Chart, and be able to match an arbitrary impedance to 50 ohms with reactive components.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build long-lasting partnerships.
  • Be fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Be fluent with Microsoft Office products.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with millimeter-wave power amplifier design and MMIC products.
  • Experience, possibly through coursework, in GaN power amplifier design.
  • Knowledge of high-efficiency power amplifier architectures.
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools such as Momentum.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a project supporting GaN MMIC power amplifier design or an aspect of its design flow using AI, or develop AI agents that improve design-flow cycle time and efficiency.
  • Work with the AI project team and the GaN MMIC design team.
  • Deliver work products that improve cycle-time efficiency.
  • Present project successes and pitfalls at the intern poster session.

Benefits

  • Hands-on experience.
  • Excellent training and ongoing supervision.
  • Invitation to attend an intern webinar series.
