About The Position

This position is for a Customer Service Specialist Trainee (Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee) within the Illinois Department of Revenue. The role involves structured training for six to twelve months, covering various aspects of Taxpayer Services programs and operations. Trainees will learn about different tax types, including Individual Income Tax, Withholding Income Tax, Sales and Use Tax, and Business Income Tax, as well as gain proficiency in GenTax and MyTax Illinois software. For those in the Local Government Services Bureau, responsibilities include processing correspondence, reviewing annexations, verifying tax locations, and analyzing remittance reports for accuracy before fund allocation. The position emphasizes attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and excellent customer service when interacting with government officials, taxpayers, local governments, and businesses via phone, in person, and email. This role is ideal for self-motivated individuals with a college degree or equivalent experience who enjoy providing appreciated service.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of college.
  • OR four years of work experience providing tax related support functions within a program area with the Illinois Department of Revenue.
  • Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program are required to take a written proficiency exam OR obtain a degree or license (a combination of certificate and credential).
  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Receives structured classroom and on-the-job training for six to twelve months covering various facets of Taxpayer Services programs and operations.
  • Completes assigned division tasks of a routine and progressively more involved nature in specific phases of tax examining processes.
  • Reviews and examines all types of taxes to verify data entry accuracy on returns and the validity of deductions.
  • Receives training to promote effective and efficient communication with government officials.
  • Receives basic technical training in specialized operations to assist group leaders and/or supervisors in priority situations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
