About The Position

At the Louisiana Department of Revenue, we are dedicated to fairly and efficiently administering the state’s tax laws to ensure compliance while providing exceptional customer service. We’re looking for a Revenue Tax Specialist 3 to join our Taxpayer Compliance Division.

Requirements

  • Six semester hours in accounting, business, economics, finance, management, information systems management, or quantitative methods.
  • Five years of experience in accounting, financial auditing, tax administration, tax policy or law, management analysis, or administrative services in a financial setting.
  • Six years of full-time work experience in any field plus two years of experience in accounting, financial auditing, tax administration, tax policy or law, management analysis, or administrative services in a financial setting.
  • A bachelor's degree plus two years of experience in accounting, financial auditing, tax administration, tax policy or law, management analysis, or administrative services in a financial setting.
  • An advanced degree or Juris Doctorate plus one year of experience in accounting, financial auditing, tax administration, tax policy or law, management analysis, or administrative services in a financial setting.
  • Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license or a current Louisiana license to practice law.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

  • Knowledgeable about the Sales Tax laws, applicable rules and regulations.
  • Strong interpretational, analytical, communication, listening and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-house reviews to determine accurate reporting and compliance with state tax laws.
  • Audit complex refund or rebate claims to verify accuracy, researching and resolving high-level errors and compliance issues.
  • Compare 3rd party data to tax returns filed by taxpayers with the Louisiana Department of Revenue to determine if the correct amount of the refund or rebate due or to deny where appropriate.
  • Document discrepancies.
  • Make appropriate adjustments to taxpayer accounts.
  • Issue assessments.
  • Approve refunds.
  • Routinely correspond with other state agencies, taxpayers, tax preparers and officers of corporations both verbally and in writing.
  • Testify before the Louisiana Board of Tax Appeals and/or district or state court as needed to defend positions.
