Revenue and Technical Accounting Manager

Serval•San Francisco, CA
•$170,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Serval is hiring a Revenue and Technical Accounting Manager to build and own revenue accounting, billing and collections, and the systems that support quote-to-cash. The role covers accurate, documented, audit-ready revenue recognition; timely billing and cash collection; and the design of agentic workflows that process contracts, generate invoices, and draft revenue entries for human review. This is a build role supporting increasingly complex contracts, including multi-year ramps, enterprise terms, usage-based pricing, and platform fees. The manager reports to Francisco Meyo, VP, Controller, and works with the Head of Finance, RevOps, Sales, Legal, Engineering, the accounting systems lead, and auditors. The role also owns payroll and benefits operational tasks, with an aim to automate manual work over time.

Requirements

  • Big 4 assurance or accounting advisory background at Senior to Senior Manager level.
  • Five to eight years of total experience; candidates coming directly from Big 4 are considered, and in-house experience is a plus.
  • Active CPA license.
  • Deep, hands-on ASC 606 experience from audit or in-house, ideally with multi-year, ramped, or usage-based contracts.
  • Experience owning billing, collections, and AR for enterprise customers, or auditing billing accuracy, cutoff, collectability, and the allowance for doubtful accounts.
  • Have built apps, scripts, or automations, or be eager to build agentic workflows; no coding background is required.
  • Advanced Excel or Sheets and working knowledge of SQL, Python, or AI tools are helpful for getting started.
  • Ability to design workflows end to end, including data, controls, and exception handling.
  • Experience writing technical memos accepted by auditors, or reviewing such memos as an auditor.

Nice To Haves

  • Owned revenue recognition at a high-growth SaaS, AI, or infrastructure company.
  • Experience with usage or consumption billing at scale using tools such as Stripe Billing, Metronome, Orb, or Maxio.
  • Experience with Rillet or another modern ERP or revenue system.
  • Built apps, agents, or automations used by other people.
  • Experience with consideration payable to customers, SSP analysis, or ASC 340-40 commissions.
  • First audit, SOX, or IPO readiness experience.
  • Exposure to Serval as a customer, user, or builder.

Responsibilities

  • Own revenue inputs to monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including revenue entries, the revenue waterfall, deferred and unbilled rollforwards, and revenue flux review.
  • Review new and amended contracts; identify performance obligations, determine transaction price, allocate standalone selling price, and reconcile ARR, billings, and revenue.
  • Account for consideration payable to customers, including service credits and fees contingent on automation outcomes, and capitalized commissions under ASC 340-40.
  • Maintain the revenue recognition policy as pricing and contract structures evolve, and draft decision-ready memos on complex accounting judgments.
  • Convert signed contracts into accurate, timely invoices, including handling customer purchase orders, portals, and vendor onboarding requirements.
  • Own AR aging, dunning cadence, and escalations; partner with Sales and Deployment on stalled payments; report DSO and cash forecasts weekly.
  • Establish usage billing with Engineering and RevOps, including measurement, invoice reconciliation, and dispute resolution.
  • Review non-standard billing and payment terms with RevOps and Legal before contracts are signed, and explain their cash-timing and revenue implications.
  • Design and build agentic workflows to extract contract terms, generate invoices, and draft revenue entries for review.
  • Define workflow responsibilities for agents and people, controls, audit trails, and exception handling.
  • Partner with the accounting systems lead on data flows from Salesforce and the usage meter into billing and Rillet.
  • Document quote-to-cash processes and key controls, including controls for agentic workflows.
  • Own revenue and AR aspects of the first audit, including PBC schedules, walkthroughs, and responses to technical questions; own billing and revenue processes in Rillet.
  • Manage payroll and benefits operations, including reconciliations, enrollment changes, provider invoices, and journal entries, in partnership with People Ops and the payroll provider; automate manual tasks over time.
