About The Position

The Department of Corrections is seeking a Retail Storekeeper 1 at Ely State Prison. Incumbents in this position perform merchandising and stock control duties to maximize profits in a retail store environment which included canteen stores throughout the statewide institutional facilities. Incumbents order inventory and oversee stock control and merchandising in a retail operation involving high volume turnover of a limited variety of merchandise which may include food, soft drinks, personal hygiene items, and small electrical appliances. Incumbents receive and inspect merchandise to ensure there is no damage, quantity received is correct and merchandise meets order specifications as well as perform physical inventory counts. Incumbents receive and input inmate orders per established procedures; print receipts/list of authorized purchases; remove items from stock and package inmate orders; distribute inmates orders through a secure window or deliver merchandise to lockdown units; verify inmate identity; check each item against receipt quantity; obtain inmate signatures to verify acceptance of merchandise; ensure items are within security level restrictions; enforce storeroom and computer security according to established policy and procedures; clean and maintain stockroom and equipment per established health and safety standards. Positions require supervision of inmate workers. Hours of operation are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday; hours are subject to change depending on the need of the agency. Incumbents oversee and participate in purchasing, inventory control and merchandising in a retail operation involving high volume turnover of a variety of merchandise which may include books, souvenir and logo items, gift items, school and office supplies, computer supplies, newspapers, magazines, tobacco products, food, soft drinks, personal hygiene items, clothing, shoes, small electrical appliances, and other items.

Requirements

  • One year of storekeeping or retail experience which included stocking, sales and/or customer service.
  • Ability to systematically arrange similar kinds of stock and/or property into groups or categories according to established criteria.
  • Ability to learn State and agency policies and procedures related to ordering merchandise for resale.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.
  • Ability to perform routine work according to set procedures and sequence.
  • Ability to establish and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to read catalogs, instructions, forms, and other materials commonly used in a supply/procurement environment.
  • Ability to complete standard forms.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Ability to work effectively with inmates in a prison canteen store.
  • Ability to calmly explain store policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Enter new inventory into a POS computer-based inventory system.
  • Process receiver documentation and prepare invoices for payment.
  • Complete accounting documentation as required.
  • Develop and/or implement a store layout plan to maximize visual appeal.
  • Shelve merchandise in proper locations.
  • Store and rotate food and dated perishable merchandise.
  • Recommend mark-downs to clear slow-moving merchandise.
  • Amend POS and re-price merchandise accordingly.
  • Develop or assist in the development of the budget for assigned product lines (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Project, plan and monitor revenue, expenses, inventory control, wages, etc. (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Project shortfalls or other obstacles toward goal attainment and implement corrective action (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Purchase goods within open-to-buy limits (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Merchandise or assist in merchandising product lines (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Develop or assist in the development and implementation of a marketing plan for assigned product lines (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Liaise with vendors on returns, best price, payment terms, etc. (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Monitor industry trends (in NSHE retail enterprise).
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
