About The Position

The Retail Security Officer helps maintain a safe and welcoming environment for customers, employees, and vendors at The Mall in Columbia in Columbia, Maryland. The role requires attention to detail, professionalism, and a customer-first mindset. Duties may vary based on site needs. The officer is expected to be reliable and professional and to contribute to maintaining a safe environment. The officer must arrive on time in full uniform, remain engaged and proactive throughout the shift, and follow all safety, training, and compliance requirements.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
State Guard license is required.
Minimum 3–6 months of prior experience in loss prevention, life safety, CCTV systems, or access computer systems.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to stay alert and respond calmly in emergency situations.
Reliable, punctual, and able to follow directions.
Ability to write clear and accurate reports.
Professional appearance and demeanor.
Willingness to submit to a background and drug screen; employment offers are contingent on successfully completing a background investigation.
High attentiveness and situational awareness.
Dependable and team-oriented.
Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong work ethic and sense of urgency.
Ability to follow safety, training, and compliance requirements.

Nice To Haves

Prior security or customer-facing experience.
Familiarity with CCTV, alarms, or access control systems.

Responsibilities

Patrol assigned areas or maintain a fixed post to monitor activity.
Control access points and manage pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Identify and report suspicious activity, incidents, or safety concerns.
Respond to alarms, emergencies, and on-site incidents.
Monitor CCTV cameras and security systems.
Complete daily activity logs, incident reports, and required documentation.
Maintain awareness of surroundings at all times.
Follow post orders, company policies, and safety procedures.
Maintain knowledge of emergency response protocols.
Inspect property for safety risks, including fire hazards and equipment issues.
Support loss prevention and recommend safety improvements.
Greet and assist customers, employees, and visitors professionally.
Provide directions and support as needed.
Maintain a visible, approachable presence on-site.
Arrive on time in full uniform and ready to work, and remain engaged and proactive throughout the shift.
