We are seeking a full-time Assistant Store Manager for the Gift Shop at John Stroger Hospital of Cook County, in Chicago, IL. This role is crucial in creating an outstanding shopping experience by delivering exceptional customer service and supporting daily operations. The Assistant Manager will assist customers, help achieve store sales goals, maintain a clean and inviting environment, process transactions accurately, and build positive relationships with hospital staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors. The ideal candidate is dependable, service-oriented, and committed to professionalism and care.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Retail experience, preferably 1 year
  • Cash handling experience, preferably 1 year
  • Basic computer skills
  • Familiarity with point-of-sale tracking technology a plus
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to build rapport with customers
  • Excellent phone etiquette and communication skills
  • Basic math skills for processing transactions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong sales skills with the ability to upsell and cross-sell products
  • Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Must successfully complete any required hospital occupational health screenings and onboarding requirements, including a drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Step into the Store Manager’s role when needed, providing manager-level coverage during operating hours.
  • Understand and carry out the Store Manager’s responsibilities in their absence.
  • Help customers by providing information, answering questions, obtaining merchandise, completing payment transactions, and preparing merchandise for delivery.
  • Assist the store manager in realizing or exceeding determined sales plans and target metric objectives.
  • Ensure consistent execution of company’s marketing and visual presentation.
  • Set up advertising displays and arrange merchandise to promote sales.
  • Train staff on how to drive sales through product knowledge and customer service standards.
  • Ensure compliance to policies and procedures and report concerns to Store Manager.
  • Maintain proper inventory controls, facilitate inventory transactions and bulk counts, and receive incoming product shipments.
  • Ensure the store is secured at closing by checking doors, alarms, and safes.
  • Manage cash handling, including counting register drawers at shift changes and ensuring accuracy.
  • Follow company policy for payment processing (cash, credit cards, payroll deduction, hospital charge account).
  • Properly notate cash overages or shortages and notify the Store Manager of unexplained differences.
  • In the absence of the Store Manager, make bank deposits and obtain change for registers.
  • Keep daily records of store sales, damages, deposit log, scheduling, employee discount, and new hire paperwork.
  • Ensure the gift shop opens when Sales Associates fail to secure a replacement and when the Store Manager is unable to work.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workspace, including supervision of cleaning services.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.
