About The Position

Respite Support Staff provide care for children, youth and adults with a diagnosed Intellectual disability. Services include Centre-Based Respite, Residential Care, Summer Programs and Day Programs. This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and has specific applicant criteria related to age, citizenship, and legal entitlement to work in Canada. The role requires adherence to The Salvation Army's Mission Statement and Christian standards of conduct.

Requirements

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Currently pursuing related post-secondary education in Social Services, Human Services, Developmental Service Worker, or Personal Support Worker.
  • Minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience in a social service setting.
  • Some experience in providing direct care to children, youth, or adults with intellectual disabilities.
  • Experience dealing with crises.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint; Email and Internet).

  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” or “G2” Driver’s License is preferred with a current original copy of driver’s abstract satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Provide an original copy of a background check with Vulnerable Sector Screening including a Broad Record Check satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the physical, emotional, medical, and behavioral needs of program participants are met.
  • Plan and facilitate recreation & leisure activities, volunteer opportunities, and skill-building opportunities.
  • Advocate on behalf of program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Provide personal care to participants as required.
  • Intervene in behavioral challenges.
  • Liaise with parents, caregivers, volunteers, and community supports/partners.
  • Prepare and distribute meals, snacks/nourishments as per the approved menu.
  • Perform house maintenance duties and general organization/maintenance of property and program supplies.
  • Record information in the daily log, shift change book, incident reports, and restraint forms.
  • Report identified needs to team members, the Respite Program Supervisor, On-Call designate, and parent/usual caregiver.
  • Perform other position-related duties as required.
