The Resource RN provides diverse professional nursing services and quality patient care while meeting regulatory requirements and the nursing scope of practice. The nurse collaborates in developing, implementing, and assessing patient care plans, and directly engages in patient care by assessing, planning, coordinating, and delegating tasks to the patient care team. The role includes educating patients, families, and staff; implementing interventions to achieve optimal outcomes; and managing issues in a physician’s absence. The Resource RN is accountable for care quality, directs care, and uses resources efficiently, including providing comprehensive perioperative care for surgical patients. The nurse conducts care assessments and interprets assessment data to determine care needs and constraints. The role requires successful completion of system-based and hospital-specific competencies, accurate documentation of observations, treatments, teaching, medications, care, and patient responses, and integration of that information into the plan of care. In collaboration with patients and their families, the RN evaluates, plans, directs, and administers care. Care plans follow established standards, policies, and procedures and incorporate cultural, religious, psychosocial, physical, and age-related considerations. The RN safely and accurately administers medications and appropriately delegates and supervises routine technical functions performed by licensed and non-licensed personnel.
