About The Position
The Iowa Department of Corrections is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join their team as a Residential Officer at the Waterloo Residential Correctional Facility. This is a 24-hour community-based corrections facility where the Residential Officer will serve as a direct service provider, engaging in high-contact interactions with clients. The role focuses on eliciting and supporting pro-social behaviors through programming that fosters personal growth and reduces the risk of reoffending. The position requires initiative, independent judgment, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team to observe and assess client behaviors. Exceptional communication skills and the ability to build quality relationships with clients are essential for driving positive change.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
- Must satisfactorily complete a background investigation, including criminal history data.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license.
- Must adhere to the use of universal precautions in the performance of job duties to minimize the potential risk for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- Will be required to become certified in First Aid and CPR.
Responsibilities
- Conducting facility security checks and searches.
- Transporting clients within the community.
- Employing effective behavior change techniques, such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral strategies.
- Supporting case managers and clients in achieving their goals, considering individual needs, disabilities, trauma, and cultural responsiveness.
- Responding to emergencies using appropriate defensive tactics and life-saving measures.
