The Resident position at Hanger, Inc. is a nationwide residency program for 2025-2026. This residency program offers exceptional training to prepare individuals for a lifelong career in Orthotics & Prosthetics, focusing on comprehensive patient care under supervision, progressing from direct to indirect. Residents will assess patients, develop and implement treatment plans, conduct follow-ups, and participate in practice management. The role involves utilizing clinical and technical skills to evaluate patients, custom design, fabricate, and fit prostheses and/or orthoses, collaborating with rehabilitation teams and employing the latest technology. Residents must adhere to NCOPE residency rules and ABC's Code of Professional Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or post-graduate Certificate in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.
  • Must have or be eligible to obtain a valid driver's license and driving record within the standards outlined in Hanger's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy and Procedures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the principles of biomechanics, pathomechanics, gait analysis, kinesiology, anatomy and physiology.
  • Understanding of componentry and its suitability and reliability for specific uses.
  • Comprehensive understanding of medical terminology.
  • Comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and kinesiology.
  • Proficient computer skills including Window based office technologies and email.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to instruct non-clinical personnel and customers on objectives of patient care services.
  • Active listening, reading and comprehension skills for analyzing reports, charts and correspondence.
  • Ability to assess patient condition and advise mentors on treatment options.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to build professional relationships with physicians, therapists and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with physicians in the evaluation and analysis of a patient’s need for prosthetic or orthotic services; recommend treatment options to physicians when necessary.
  • Examine and evaluate patient's needs in relation to disease and functional loss.
  • Formulate design of prostheses/orthoses.
  • Select materials/componentry, take cast/measurements, model rectifications/layouts, taking into account new techniques and materials.
  • Perform fittings, including static and dynamic alignments.
  • Evaluate prosthetic/orthotic device on patient and adjust to assure fit, function, medical efficacy, and quality of work.
  • Instruct patient in use of prosthesis/orthosis.
  • Identify and reconcile issues/problems to ensure patient satisfaction with device(s) provided.
  • Provide follow-up with patients and physicians.
  • Provide detailed clinical notes to patient records that support medical necessity.
  • Provide information to administrative staff to conduct reimbursement activities.
  • Provide in-service training to physicians and allied health care professionals.
  • Utilize effective materials management, quality and performance processes to maximize device quality and medical efficacy, maintaining a proper balance with costs and operational/financial performance.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations; compliance with Medicare, HIPAA and other governmental regulations; compliance with bloodborne and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
  • Available to participate in on-call if applicable.
  • Provide assistance to other clinical staff.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.
