About The Position

The Resident Field Diesel Technician is responsible for operating a company-issued service vehicle and traveling to customer locations to diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy construction equipment. This role requires a self-motivated individual who can work independently while delivering safe, high-quality, and efficient service that exceeds customer expectations. The position may require overtime, overnight travel, and occasional weekend work based on customer and business needs. This position reports to the Sioux Falls Branch.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record; Class A CDL or ability to obtain
  • Four or more years of experience diagnosing and repairing diesel-powered heavy construction equipment
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a remote field service environment
  • Strong commitment to safety and compliance with company and customer safety policies
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-first mindset
  • Highly developed diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities using mechanical and electronic diagnostic tools
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage schedules, work orders, and multiple customer locations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrain components, and equipment operation
  • Must supply and maintain a complete set of metric and SAE hand tools, including 1-inch drive tooling

Responsibilities

  • Perform field repairs, maintenance, and preventive maintenance with minimal direct supervision.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair equipment to meet OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications and quality standards.
  • Test, inspect, and evaluate all major machine systems to accurately identify failures and required repairs.
  • Recondition and repair equipment and components safely, efficiently, and effectively by planning repair methods and sequencing work.
  • Perform diagnostic inspections and repair determination inspections in accordance with established procedures; identify root causes of failures and recommend appropriate repair solutions.
  • Operate heavy equipment safely and responsibly during testing, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
  • Accurately document labor, parts, materials, outside purchases, and repair details using company systems and work orders.
  • Assist with parts and inventory management by providing accurate information to support inventory control and replenishment.
  • Participate in manufacturer, company, and industry training programs to maintain and expand technical knowledge.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company and OSHA safety standards.
  • Properly maintain and care for company vehicles, service equipment, tools, and other assigned assets.
  • Complete all required service reports, inspection forms, and job-related documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships by providing exceptional customer service and communicating repair recommendations clearly with customers.
  • Represent the company professionally while working at customer locations and in the field.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Service Manager.
