About The Position

The Commonwealth Corps service internship program aims to engage Massachusetts residents in direct service to strengthen communities, address critical needs, and increase volunteerism. The Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA) oversees the program and supports host site partners and members. The North Shore Community Development Coalition (NSCDC) seeks a Commonwealth Corps member to support its Resident Services Department, which assists low-income residents facing housing insecurity and homelessness. This role will also involve supporting volunteer recruitment and data collection for the department.

Requirements

  • A Massachusetts resident with legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • 18 years of age at minimum.
  • Excited to give back to your community and interested in developing your skills and gaining new professional experiences.
  • Committed to 10 months of service and able to balance service internship commitments with personal commitments.
  • Ability to work with others collaboratively and build strong relationships both internally and externally.
  • A respect for the ideas and experience of those from marginalized communities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual speaking both English and Spanish.
  • Experience with navigating support services and with creative problem-solving.
  • Experience in working with volunteers.
  • Experience with data management.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of service, serving August 17, 2026 through June 19, 2027.
  • Attend Commonwealth Corps trainings and events held by MSA, generally 1-2 times per month.
  • Participate in a minimum of 30 minutes of MSA-related activities each week, including filling out timesheets, completing reflections, or other MSA-related tasks.
  • Help applicants complete housing applications for affordable housing units.
  • Provide one-on-one financial counseling to clients seeking financial services.
  • Maintain a caseload of clients for one-on-one support, which may include researching and enrolling clients in classes and workshops.
  • Work with existing community programs to recruit participants for counseling.
  • Maintain a schedule of appointments with clients, aiming to fill up to 20 hours a week with one-on-one support.
  • Assess current data collection methods for the Resident Services Department, define data to be collected, support data collection efforts, and create materials highlighting program impact.
  • Build and manage the volunteer base for the Resident Services department, including identifying best practices for recruitment and management, assessing needs, refining applications, publicizing needs, and defining recruitment, intake, enrollment, and engagement processes.
  • Assist with coordination of special projects, events, and activities.
  • Attend weekly meetings as required by supervisor.
  • Assist staff on daily tasks to ensure premium service and smooth program functioning.
  • Participate in the greater Commonwealth Corps community, including cross-site learning groups, newsletter contributions, and online platforms.
  • Collaborate with and support other Commonwealth Corps Members at the NSCDC.

Benefits

  • Stipend of $1,250 semi-monthly while in service, up to $26,250, minus taxes and withholdings.

  • Limited travel reimbursement from MSA to Corps-wide MSA-sponsored activities.
  • Limited travel reimbursement from NSCDC for certain service-related travel away from your usual service location.
  • 10 Mental Health/Personal Days (1 day = 8hrs) counting toward service hours.
  • The opportunity for at least 10 days of planned absences (may include holidays, does not count towards hours requirement).
