About The Position

Insight Housing has been providing housing, food, and support services to help individuals transition from homelessness to stable housing for over 50 years. The Dwight Way program is a temporary shelter for women, offering a safe haven and support services to assist individuals in building income, skills, and finding permanent housing. The Resident Advocate plays a crucial role in providing direct supportive services and supervision to the residents within this women's shelter.

Requirements

  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Ability to complete CPR/First Aid Training.
  • Prior direct support experience with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health, substance abuse, or other social issues is highly preferred.
  • Lived experience will be valuable.
  • Prior Customer service experience in any industry will be considered.
  • Maintain flexible schedule and be available to work shifts on short notice and overtime when required for on-call staff.
  • Commitment to serving individuals experiencing homelessness, alcohol and drug dependency, and other mental health issues.
  • Commitment to a trauma-informed approach to care.
  • Knowledge of computer and Microsoft office suite (Word, excel, outlook and TEAMS).
  • Experience with Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) is a plus.
  • Ability to interact in a supportive and professional manner with staff and program participants of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to provide good customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations.
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a plus.
  • Good interpersonal and crisis intervention skills with a can-do and flexible attitude.
  • Ability to work well under high pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, multitask, maintain confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct, attitude, and appearance at all times.
  • Must be able to receive and maintain criminal records clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain TB clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supportive services and supervision to homeless individuals in the women's shelter.
  • Conduct program participant intakes and assess barriers to housing.
  • Assist program participants with activities of daily living, including bathing, hygiene, and maintaining room cleanliness.
  • Enter data into the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS).
  • Assist with completing necessary documents and provide referrals to community services (substance abuse treatment, CES housing navigation, mental health services, benefits advocacy, veteran's services).
  • Establish and maintain clear communication with program participants, ensuring their needs are met through active and empathetic listening.
  • Maintain supervision of program participants and shelter property.
  • Provide emotional support and counseling.
  • Manage the new program participant intake process, including accepting referrals from CES, managing emergency beds, and orienting new participants to the Shelter Handbook.
  • Create intake packets and participant charts.
  • Update daily spreadsheets and shelter sign-in sheets.
  • Assist with preparing and serving meals, cleaning, laundry, and restocking supplies.
  • Provide crisis intervention and advocate for program participants.
  • Educate participants on program and facility rules and ensure compliance.
  • Complete and file all required paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Review and update staff logs and participant communication logs.
  • Ensure accurate and complete transfer of information to other staff during shift changes.
  • Participate in program planning and policy development.
  • Promote a safe, healthy, and clean working environment.
  • Attend meetings and trainings.
  • Complete and submit timesheets accurately.
  • Adhere to Insight Housing's Code of Conduct.
  • Perform other assigned tasks.
