About The Position

The Residence Hall Desk Assistant (DA) serves as the first point of contact for students, guests, and visitors entering the residence halls. Desk Assistants play a vital role in creating a safe, secure, and welcoming residential community by monitoring building access, providing exceptional customer service, and supporting the daily operations of the Office of Residence Life. This position requires professionalism, reliability, sound judgment, and the ability to respond calmly and appropriately in a variety of situations.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled as a full-time Worcester State University student.
  • Maintain a cumulative Worcester State University GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing with Worcester State University and the Office of Residence Life.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Be dependable, organized, and able to work independently.
  • Successfully complete all required employment paperwork and University training.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor all traffic entering and exiting the residence hall.
  • Verify identification for all individuals entering the residence halls.
  • Conduct bag checks of all bags entering the residence halls in accordance with University policy.
  • Manage the guest sign-in process and enforce the University's guest visitation policy.
  • Notify Residence Life or University Police of policy violations, suspicious activity, or safety concerns.
  • Report emergency situations immediately to Residence Life professional staff and/or University Police.
  • Assist Residence Life and University Police during emergency or crisis situations.
  • Provide friendly, professional, and respectful customer service to residents, guests, and visitors.
  • Answer questions and provide accurate information about Residence Life services and campus resources.
  • Refer students to appropriate University offices when additional assistance is needed.
  • Report to all scheduled shifts on time and remain on duty until properly relieved by the next Desk Assistant.
  • Communicate important information, incidents, or concerns during shift change.
  • Maintain accurate guest logs and other required desk documentation.
  • Submit maintenance requests for issues identified in public areas.
  • Report damage, theft, vandalism, or maintenance concerns to Residence Life professional staff.
  • Maintain familiarity with the Residence Hall Handbook, Residence Life policies, and University procedures.
  • Build positive working relationships with Residence Life staff, University Police, Facilities, and fellow student employees.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and respect in all interactions.
  • Serve as a positive role model within the residential community.
  • Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Attend all required training sessions, staff meetings, and in-service programs.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and arrive on time for every scheduled shift.
  • Notify supervisors immediately of emergencies or circumstances affecting scheduled work.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with University policy and FERPA.
  • Exercise sound judgment and appropriately refer any situations beyond the scope of the position.
  • Dress appropriately and present a professional appearance while on duty.
  • Refrain from using personal devices in ways that interfere with job responsibilities.
  • Be attentive, engaged, and actively monitoring the residence hall throughout the entire shift.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Desk Assistants, Resident Assistants, professional staff, and University Police.
  • Be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during University breaks as needed.
  • Maintain eligibility for student employment throughout the duration of employment.
