About The Position

This role participates in planned research projects by performing research protocols with minimal direction and guidance from the principal investigator, program director or senior scientists. May exercise moderate discretion and judgment in the execution and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived. Dr Tasian's translational laboratory in the Division of Oncology and Center for Childhood Cancer Research focuses upon the development of new treatments for high-risk childhood leukemias with an emphasis upon small molecule inhibitor therapies and cellular (CAR T cell) immunotherapies. Dr Tasian is seeking a motivated, dynamic, and hard-working Research Technician to join her laboratory to assist with preclinical animal model studies and with correlative biology studies for childhood leukemia clinical trials using primary patient samples.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience - Required
  • Advanced understanding of lab procedures, protocols, and equipment.
  • Intermediate proficiency with lab specific experiments / techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Ability to process patient leukemia specimens following appropriate training, handle confidential patient-related materials, and maintain a protected database of confidential patient-related information from clinical trials.
  • Ability to perform specialized animal studies (immunocompromised mice) for human leukemia xenotransplantation, preclinical drug or cell therapy treatment, disease monitoring, treatment efficacy analyses, and pharmacodynamic monitoring. Specific animal skills will be mastered after training and include retro-orbital venous bleeding, tail vein injections, intraperitoneal injections, oral gavage, bioluminescent imaging, and tissue processing.
  • Ability to learn specialized flow cytometry analysis of mouse and human samples and to use flow cytometry data analysis and graphing software.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and plan experiments with appropriate Principal Investigator and post-doctoral fellow oversight.
  • Ideally, the candidate will contribute to writing of scientific manuscripts and to figure preparation; co-authorship will be commensurate with level of project involvement and manuscript contributions.
  • Ability to handle multiple, time-dependent tasks efficiently and conscientiously and to conduct oneself with professionalism and maturity.
  • Being a good team player is a must for our laboratory culture, and a good sense of humor is also quite welcome!
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to use computers, email, Word, and PowerPoint software and to learn other programs needed for data presentation and figure preparation (eg, Prism).
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples with minimal supervision
  • Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes/ reports the data
  • Performs tasks that require knowledge of advanced techniques and lab equipment
  • Performs advanced calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures

  • Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment
  • Coordinates schedules of tests & procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Conducts literary searches as required
