About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Research Technician I to assist with ongoing experimentation in a laboratory setting. This role involves supporting experiments aimed at understanding skeletal muscle loss in a murine model of Pancreatic Cancer. The technician will work under the guidance of experienced researchers, with the goal of developing their ability to guide biological experiments towards manuscript submission. Responsibilities include animal handling, dissection, assisting with surgeries, sample collection and preparation, performing basic molecular biology techniques (Western Blotting, RT-qPCR), assisting with histology and immunohistochemistry, and general lab maintenance.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • On the job training will be provided.
  • Previous work in a laboratory is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a large complex health care or academic setting preferred.
  • Understanding of medical or laboratory terminology preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels preferred.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ongoing experimentation in the lab.
  • Stock necessary reagents/supplies.
  • Assist with ongoing experiments.
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Resolve technical issues related to equipment operation.
  • Participate in ongoing experiments within the laboratory that aim to elucidate the mechanism(s) of skeletal muscle loss in a murine model of Pancreatic Cancer.
  • Work under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Cole, a postdoc, and a graduate student within the lab.
  • Develop ability to guide biological experiments with an end-goal of manuscript submission.
  • Animal handling and dissection.
  • Actively involved in animal experiments and assist in animal surgeries.
  • Participate in collection of samples and preparation of samples post-surgery experiments.
  • Perform basic molecular biology techniques such as Western Blotting, and RT-qPCR.
  • Work with the postdoc to perform histology and immunohistochemistry of murine tumor and skeletal muscle tissue.
  • Participate in basic lab maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.
