Research Scientist, Quantum Error Correction, Quantum AI

Google•Los Angeles, CA
•$147,000 - $210,000

About The Position

As a Quantum Research Scientist, you will develop quantum error correction (QEC) schemes for fault-tolerant quantum computing, with a focus on superconducting qubits and high-connectivity platforms. You will develop and analyze QEC for modular architectures, addressing challenges such as inter-chip entangling links that are slower or more faulty than on-chip gates. The role includes developing fault-tolerant circuits for logical gates while navigating hardware connectivity tradeoffs, and engineering higher-accuracy decoding algorithms for high-connectivity codes such as Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes. You will share and publish findings that stem from internal projects and active collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes globally. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build a large-scale quantum computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations and to unlock solutions to classically intractable problems.

Requirements

  • PhD in a quantum computing domain such as mathematics, physics, computer science, or electrical engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Research publication experience in quantum error correction.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience owning and initiating research agendas.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new quantum codes that achieve high encoding rate, high distance, or favorable hardware layout, including LDPC codes and yoked encoding schemes.
  • Adapt error correction circuits to hardware connectivity constraints.
  • Analyze fault-tolerant circuits for syndrome measurement and logical operations.
  • Simulate quantum codes under noise models and evaluate their performance.
  • Share and publish research findings, including work inspired by internal projects and collaborations with partner universities and technical institutes.
