About The Position

The Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH is looking for a qualified entry-level research scientist to join a research effort relating to the photophysical characterization of novel chromophores and materials. This position is designed to be flexible, with responsibilities evolving to meet business needs and enable individual growth.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work in an office environment at a desk and computer.
  • Must be able to work in a lab environment.
  • Must be able to lift or carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • May travel up to 10% to conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related science or engineering field.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the optical characterization of materials, including techniques like spectrophotometry and steady-state and time-resolved luminescence.
  • Experience with or knowledge of the following characterization techniques: Ground-state UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy.
  • Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy.
  • Luminescence lifetime measurements (e.g., Time-Correlated Single-Photon Counting - TCSPC).
  • Luminescence quantum yield measurements.
  • Proficiency in advanced data analysis and visualization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to research, devise, and learn new techniques and technical topics.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Google Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Detailed optical characterization of new materials to discover and understand their unique properties.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to investigate fundamental structure-property relationships.
  • Solve important, long-term challenges in an environment that strongly encourages collaboration, publication in top journals, and conference attendance.
